BangShift Question Of The Day: What Is The Best Roadtrip Food?

BangShift Question Of The Day: What Is The Best Roadtrip Food?

We’re getting ready to start our road trip up to the California Hot Rod Reunion today, and it made us think. What is the best roadtrip food? It could be your favorite thing to munch on while actually driving, or the place you just have to stop at on every trip. Do you crave something specific? For us it depends on where we are road tripping too. If we’re in Texas we always have to stop at Babe’s Chicken House, and when we’re on the road we are always keeping our eyes peeled for BBQ and anything fried, but we almost never miss a Waffle House for breakfast. And whoever the guy is that figured out how to stuff peanut butter into a chunk of pretzel is alright in my book. I could kiss that guy. At the same time I want to punch him because the damn gallon jug of those little bastards is no match for Chad. No wonder I’m fat…

So let’s break it down into two groups.

What is your favorite “eat it on the road” snack food?

What is your favorite roadtrip food, regardless of where you actually eat it?

Eat it on the road would be “Cool Ranch” Doritos and road trip food would be Fuddruckers, I love their burgers.

  2. Ermott

Eat on the Road – Apples and baby carrots

Place to eat while stopped – Waffle House, but only occasionally.

I know this sounds boring but I spend three weeks a month on the road and if I ate Doritios, and Beef jerky and Hostess Twinkies and Taco Bell and Burgers every day, I’d soon be as big as the vehicle I drive.

I might add that unsweetened coconut water is nice too. (Boring I know, but coffee all day makes you have to stop and pee. Stopping to pee costs me money.)

On the ROAD…. Trail mix with extra M&M’s…..
Off the ROAD…. Memphis style pulled pork and a gallon of SWEET TEA….LOL

Snacks: gummi bears, beef jerky, pretzels and what ever else looks good that day.

Food: Truck stops. I blame my dad for hooking me on one pound porterhouse steak, a dozen fried eggs, and a mountain of hash browns.

  5. JP55

Jack Links Tender Strips beef jerky (3/4 lb bag)
Anywhere that has a drive through and driver friendly food e.g. chicken mcnuggets & lg fries

If you are on the east coast ,”Five guys burgers and fries” is the best you will find.Voted the best $5 burger many times. Try it!

We always bring a bag of tootsie roles.Hand them out at tool booths, construction backups etc.Puts smiles on faces.

  8. Ruroy

I like to end the day at a Famous Dave’s BarBQ. They’re not in every state but are in most. Wife and I took a month long cross country road trip this June and probably ate there 5or6 times. Never get tired of their food.(or beer) Hey chad there’s one in Bakersfield about 30 min. From the track. You won’t regret it.

M&M s jerky and coke in the car , and crispy creme / fat burger outa the car. lets see if every 100 lbs is a tenth my car could be a tenth quicker if I quit eatin road trip food ALL the time.

When im driving -nothing,just water and gum, When im looking to eat out of the car its gotta be a good diner (perferably Greek) or Perkins or White Castle. I also agree with the above poster –5 guys rocks !

  11. tom sime

Peppered beef jerky n starburst for snacks..along with coke
Gotta have a steak on any good roadtrip…good food with good friends

On the road, I’m a Kirkland Trail Mix fan + cigars + a cocktail of Red Bull (sugar-free) and red Gatorade. I exit the vehicle smelling like an ashtray, brushing crumbs off my shirt, M&M’s falling out of my ears but WIDE AWAKE and looking for a bathroom.

The large Gatorade bottle is an excellent ashtray, if any dirtbags like me are still reading this post.

For off-road eating, I try to make a pre-trip list of places using and Urbanspoon and

Sorry, those sites for pre-trip planning were:
Kevin’s BBQ Joints: http://kevinsbbqjoints.com/ (use his “search” function for a list of BBQ joints nearest your location)

Urbanspoon – urbanspoon.com lots of different search criteria. Looking for Ecuadorian food places that deliver?

Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives page on FoodNetwork site. Look for places Guy Fieri and his Camaro have been trailered to. http://www.foodnetwork.com/diners-drive-ins-and-dives/index.html

Anything that IS NOT a freaking chain restaurant !!!!!!

Do yourselves a favor …… eat some REAL Food ….. and dive into a locally owned and run cafe , bistro , diner or restaurant and leave the chain garbage to the rubes , families with kids and retirees

Become a ‘ Traveler ‘ rather than just another goram tourist … for the love of Pete 1

  14. hoosier

I can flip back and forth between mom and pop or a chain ( mainly Arbys ) but breakfast is almost always a pecan waffle at Waffle House.

On the road: sunflower seeds or beef jerky(sf seeds are good for staying awake) and diet pepsi.
Off the road: Any locaally owned cafe or restaraunt as long as the place is clean Ill give anyplace a try. I’d love to see a real bbq joint in this place and would make a trip out of it just to eat some good bbq.
