Question Of The Day: Can You Find An Uglier Car Than This 1989 Nissan S-Cargo?

Question Of The Day: Can You Find An Uglier Car Than This 1989 Nissan S-Cargo?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You know the tired old saying…it’s why I think a Chrysler Cordoba is a handsome large two-door when most people see it as a late-1970s Yank Tank that needs a hurried date with the crusher. But there are some cars that are just…freaking…ugly. As in “abandon hope, all ye who view” ugly. The kind of ugly that stops the jokes, because it’s not funny anymore. Pontiac Aztek. The quickly downsized early 1960s Mopars. Citroen 2CVs. There is the line between “unique” and “you need to go back to the drawing board, collect your supplies, and GTFO of my building” and some designers don’t just cross the line, they pick it up and proceed to jump rope with it.

Doug DeMuro currently owns two cars that work on beauty: a 2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage and a 1997 Dodge Viper GTS, complete in the proper blue-with-white stripe paint. Beautiful cars in their own right. But you see that thing parked next to them? The one that has the tackiest headlight placement since the Ford EXP? That is a 1989 Nissan S-Cargo…or, to translate it better, the underpinnings of a 1980s Nissan Sentra fitted with a very Japanese-like body that is designed to emulate a snail…if a snail’s shell had an unfortunate meeting at the rear with a chop saw. Since it’s 25 years old, DeMuro willingly had it imported and owns it.

But here’s my question: yes, this little frog-faced thing is horrible. But is it the ugliest car out there? I don’t think so, and I bet you readers have plenty to offer up that are much, much worse. Without 20,000 suggestions of the Pontiac Aztek, what do you think is uglier than the S-Cargo?

DeMuro’s huffing nitrous or worse. The S-Cargo was a classic from the moment it left the Pike Factory 25+ years ago. I’m bummed that he’s bringing attention to them now that they’re legal for importation as I regard them as a well kept secret.
