Question Of The Day: Have You Started To Plan Out Your Winter Projects Yet?

Question Of The Day: Have You Started To Plan Out Your Winter Projects Yet?

Can someone please explain to me when, exactly, September 1st became Pumpkin Spice Everything Day? The wife and I just did our grocery shopping and we weren’t just assaulted with everything Autumn, we were straight-up bitch-slapped with it. Wow, where did this year go? Oh, yeah, that’s right: event after event, more photographs that I dare count, over 5,500 miles of work-related driving (never mind flight time), thirty 1/4 mile passes…it’s true what they say, time flies when you’re having fun! In fact, the time has flown by so fast that we are finally into September: school busses, leaves starting to fall, and yes…pumpkin spice every-freaking-thing under the sun. Hooray? At least Halloween is coming up.

But Autumn holds another significance: the gearhead season starts it’s wind down. We are still a ways away from going into full winter mode, but now is the perfect time to figure out what needs to be done when the shows are over, the tracks are closed, and the weather goes from “cool and crisp, but nice” to wet, soggy and bone-achingly cold. Do I have winter projects planned? Eh…hard to say, honestly. As much as I’d like to spend the winter months jamming an engine into the Raven Imperial, I don’t see it happening anytime soon…the most work it’ll probably see before Spring will be the eviction of the red wasps from their nest next to the fuel filler tube. I’ll probably have the Angry Grandpa 300C down for some needed maintenance and some touch-ups here and there, like replacing the busted fog lights and repainting the faded grille, and I’ll check the brakes and the torsion struts while I’m in there. If I get ambitious, my wife’s Mustang might come into the garage for some attention, like rear brake work and a height adjustment…I’m not liking it’s sagging ass stance.

But what about you? Doing an engine over the winter months? Planning some bodywork and/or paint? Maybe this is the year you just store the ride, or you have something really interesting planned, like a LeMons build. Let’s hear about them!

Finish the turbo install on the Firebird and have been thinking of opening up the TKO in the Skylark to see how it looks and change out anything that looks due.

Not only has everything gone overboard with Pumpkin Spice, Starbucks is now putting actual pumpkin in their Pumpkin Spice coffee. I got what they were doing the first time – “Let’s put the same spice you put in pumpkin pie in the coffee!” But I don’t understand what led somebody to think, “I know just what this coffee needs – winter squash mixed in!”

OK, enough about that – I’ve made a commitment to getting the Dart back on the road. It mostly needs rigging up the cooling fans, welding the exhaust back together, a lower intercooler mount, and a trunk mounted battery setup. But once I get it running, I also will need to put in that 8.75″ rear axle before I grenade the 7.25″ one back there now.

Build a 555 pulse counter for my Stude Trailer Toter’s ancient, Sun tachometer.Parts on bench for the last six months. Otherwise, teach myself how to TIG.

First need to organize the garage in order to work on anything! It’s like a tornado whipped thru the garage, parts everywhere! Being a parts hoarder doesn’t help either.

Replace all the suspension bushings in my Neon. Tear the drivetrain out of my 74 Toronado donor car. Start my teams next Lemon build. How long is winter?

The only thing I want to get done this winter is the same plan I’ve had for the last three winters. Get an 8/34 rear end and install it in my 68 Dart. Life keeps getting in the way of my plans.

finally finish putting my 72 Mavrick back together. metal work is done. time for paint purgatory while the 347 goes
    together.

Getting a 408 from CME engines for my 66 dart. have a cope racing 904-4, and a set of TTi’s ready to go. as with Dustin and Matt, I’m going to section a truck 8.75 to make one for my dart. Mittler bros jig is on order. maybe a spring relocation and mini tub as well. That, and I’m stuffing an SR20DET Black top in a 72 Datsun 510 wagon….wahoo!

I avoid starbucks the way Geordie avoids Chevys. There’s a place called Tim Hortons all over Canada, and parts of the USA. I avoid that too because Canadians are nuts about it. McDonald’s coffee is actually very good here and priced properly.

    Winter project? Lookin’ at BangShift!!!

I think I’ll screw the 430 Buick together; but this winter I’m going wheeling and skiing as often as I physically can.
