With Christmas just around the corner and winter storm Electra having just dumped up to a foot of the white and fluffy stuff across the Northeast, it’s probably safe to say that winter’s here.
Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with the snow.
There’s nothing like taking your car up snowy roads to the mountains for a weekend of skiing and snowboarding or ripping a few donuts in an empty unplowed parking lot, especially if you have all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and a good set of snow tires.
That said, with snow comes the dreaded salt trucks, traffic-jam-causing accidents, and drivers that decided that they really needed to cut you off and then go twenty under the speed limit on freshly plowed roads.
If you’re like me, your hot rod or muscle car is taking a long nap in a garage or under a car cover, waiting for warmer temps and a few good Spring rainstorms to wash all of the salt off the road, and in the meantime you’re driving around in your winter beater.
So, what’s your weapon of choice for these snowy months (If you’re in SoCal or other parts of the country that never see snow, keep your smug “Snow? What’s snow?” comments to yourselves…)? A lifted and locked front and rear Jeep? A big ‘ole 4×4? One of them fancy Japanese turbo AWD alphabet soup cars? Something small, crappy, and “wrong wheel drive” that you wouldn’t mind leaving in a ditch?
Or, do you go full Bangshift with an A-body Buick?

What do I drive in winter ? My daily driver Mercedes SUV
What would I drive if it were available in the US ?
The Bowler EXR – 5

Now thats a winter time all season Hot Rod !
The very thought of blowing by C7’s , SS’s and SRT’s in the summer as well as schooling more than a few Cayenne Turbos in the winter would be too tempting to pass up 😉
Up until awhile ago DD snowmobile was a 70 1/2 falcon 351W 9 posi with truck snow boots that thing went everywhere.
Best vehicle I’ve had in the snow…Hands down my 91 Chevy Suburban 4X4 3/4 ton. That truck with BFG A/T’s was a freaking beast in the snow.
Second choice would have to be my 76 Ford LTD station wagon….a set of snow tires and it would go damn near anywhere you pointed it.
My daily driver 2005 Dodge Ram handles the snow just great, and its a 2WD, here it’s all about taking it slow and steady on crappy roads.
Chevette
66 Nissan Patrol
Something old and crappy. If it snowed around here everyone would be banging into each other.
I saw it happen one time with not even enough snow to cover the grass good.
Can I change my mind and make it that Cat from the above article?
Nope, you’re locked in!
We are taking notes.
My DD Subaru seems good but I had really good luck in a Buick Lesabre with Firestone Town and Country snows on it.
My daily driver is a 79 El Camino. Just shovel the bed full of snow and go!! Best car I ever had for driving in the snow (now don’t laugh!!) was a 91 Geo Storm!!! That little sucker would crawl through anything!!
79 Coupe De Ville with 64 Chevelle dog dish hubcaps to save the wire wheel covers. With 425 C.I. you can choose “Safe and Sane” or not.
We live in Sunny SoCal…Running Springs @ 6488 elev. we get plenty of snow, and I have to agree with AngryJoe, ’91 Suburban 2500 4X4 with Goodyear Wrangler A/T’s best in snow, but alas it has gone the way of the Dodo bird. Now have a ’83 Jeep CJ7, Love it, the wife…not so much!
440 6 Pac …. Sounds like you’ve driven in Van. B.C. 90% of them , just don’t know ! ….. my choice ….. my 99 F- 150 4x with a set of ” MATTRACKS ” and dam’n near nothing stops me ….. Be aware …. I did see a military driver high center a ” Hummer ” ….. Yup
