Looking at cheap cars on Craigslist always gets our juices flowing around here as we come up with jillions of schemes and ideas on how to make them into the coolest things ever. One of our favorite searches is for cars between $200 and $500, because you never know what kind of junk you might find. On occasion you find a car that could be really fun if someone dropped a few dimes into it. With the two we’ve chosen for this Would You Rather, you’ll have to squint real hard and think about the fun that horsepower can bring to the table, because neither of them will make you drool on their own.
First up is a 1993 four-door Blazer. It’s the S10 of course, which makes it small and parts cheap, but just slapping in another 2.8 or whatever the hell came in it originally wouldn’t be all that BangShifty, so we would say that a junkyard 5.3 turbo LS would be the ticket to fun. Sure the rearend and trans would need some work to live with the power, but we aren’t going to go into that just yet. Would you drive it if it had 700 horsepower? 500? 1000?
Your second choice in this game of Would You Rather, is the venerable Jeep Cherokee. This 1986 model originally came with a little 2.3 liter V6 but that’s long gone so the poor thing is practically begging to come home with you and become the proud recipient of a turbocharged late model Hemi. Would you drive it? It’s clearly the “ugly one” of the two of these, if you can possibly say one looks “good”. But, it could haul ass, and maybe even be cool with the 4 wheel drive used for increased traction on the dragstrip. Would you drive it if it had big power?

Hemi Jeep, hands down. It always makes me curious when people want to build something different, and then they build a chevy, just. like. everyone. else.
I love the magazine articles that start, Joe blow wanted something different so the took a Camero and a LS and……………
Hemi Jeep.
Neither. I’ll take the Cherokee with a Blown Hemi.
Everyone so far wants the Cherokee hemi, so I’ll be different and pick the Blazer LS. More seriously, all I’m concerned about is lots of ponies. I don’t really care what makes them.
whelk, you said you wanted lots of ponies but you picked the blazer over the Cherokee?
I think Id rather dump a turbo ford coyote motor in an awd ford explorer
I am actually doing this (Blazer) project but instead of the turbo 5.3 I am using the original 4.3 with a centrifugal SC. 500 hp in a $600 truck. Yes please.
