Beta Testing Gone Wrong: Here’s The First Publicly Crashed C8 Corvette!

Beta Testing Gone Wrong: Here’s The First Publicly Crashed C8 Corvette!

It was bound to happen. Eventually, a C8 Corvette was going to bite the dust outside of official crash testing procedures. We expected the first one to appear in Copart, or maybe at Cleveland Race and Repair as some kind of palletized engine combination. Come to think of it, that’s a tasty idea. But we weren’t wanting to see the first wounded C8 still wearing Michigan manufacturer plates…yet here we are. On a very twisty section of California Highway 120 between the towns of Moccasin and Groveland, the Corvette, as part of an engineering convoy, reportedly got too close to the center lines and clipped an SUV, and at some point in the crash sequence a Ford Ranger got collected up too. The Corvette’s interior tub seems to have held up pretty well, at least, which is good news since we don’t know if anyone sustained any injuries in this incident.

Oddly enough, this almost feels like dèjá vu: one of the first crashes of the C7 Corvette happened on a twisty road in the Southwest, and involved a blue car. Just saying, from here on out GM might want to start sending their test cars out in primer. Or maybe should have the twisty roads blocked off so that the team can actually canyon-carve in peace?

“It looks like a jet fighter interior”…when was the last time this guy was in a jet fighter that looked like that?

Priest Grade, both old and new versions, is one of those roads that require your full attention, even if just driving a Camry. Add cell phones, texting, general inattention and this road can be down right scary. If you had it to yourself though, jeez, what fun could be had. My sister lives in Groveland, and like many canyon roads, it’s a brake pad and tire killer, but x10.
