Jim Nabors, who’s famed rendition of “Back Home In Indiana” has served as a start of the Indy 500 for the past 36 years. He has missed two Indy 500’s, including 2012, but was able to be there in spirit via a recording done earlier in the week. This year Nabors will be on hand for the 500 live and will once again sing the famed song. His first time singing the song at the Indy 500 was 1972, but it wasn’t until 1987 that Jim would become “the guy” to sing the song each year. At 82 years old, it’s hard to believe he can still belt it out, but we hope he does for many years to come. When he can no longer sing it, I hope they start up with the recording of him singing it back in 1972 and start from there for each new year. It will never be the same with anyone else singing it.
