BangShift Daily Tune Up: “Copperhead Road” by Steve Earle (1988)

According to Steve Earle, “Copperhead Road” was the World’s first blend of Heavy Metal and Bluegrass. I think it just kicks ass. The song is all about Shine, Horsepower, and Pot, and I like two of those things a lot. This song is as much story telling as it is hard hitting, and the Mason Lodge bought Dodge drives that home, pun intended. Big block power and Moonshine, it’s what hot rodding is all about and how racing in the south got started. This song covers that and more.

When the album came out in 1988 it was immediately praised for it’s hard hitting messages in songs like “Devil’s Right Hand”, “Snake Oil”, “Johnny Come Lately”, and more. In Rolling Stone’s review of the album, the called it power twang, and said that this hard hitting album “starts off murderously” which we totally approve of.

Listen and enjoy, and for what it’s worth you should also check out “Snake Oil”, “Devil’s Right Hand”, and “Johnny Come Lately”. You’ll dig them too.

One of the greatest, Steve’s the real deal.

Chad, why don’t you like horsepower??

You got to hear “Sweet lil 66” by him too. Another great car song. And his version of “6 days on the road ” is probably the best version out there
