If you are over the age of 40 or 45, and a hot rodder, you know that the 1960’s weren’t just about the cars themselves but also about all the culture surrounding them. There were tons of songs that were all about cars, racing, girls and cars, cruising, etc. Little Deuce Coupe, Dead Man’s Curve, Little Honda, 409 and more all encompassed the culture we’re talking about. But the one that seems most appropriate now, with the street race and no prep culture we’re experiencing now, is the Beach Boys Shut Down.
Not familiar, watch this.
IMO the most detailed and descriptive lyrics of any car song ever, and it all flows so smoothly. Not an easy task. One of my fave shower-singalong songs. I need a bigger water heater.
If you’re into cars and not the Beach Boys, then you have a problem! First saw the Beach Boys “Endless Summer” album on TV back in the early 70’s and loved them ever since.
Only problem is the car that gets shut down is the Corvette. A 327 fuelly Corvette is no match for the 413 Max wedge. We have recreated this race numerous times and the results are always the same. Max Wedge by anywhere from 6 to 10 cars. Corvette just cant’ stay with the Wedge after the 300 foot mark. There are several videos of these races on YouTube if you doubt me. My personal experience, 1963 425 Max Wedge Savoy was always the same. Never lost to the 327 vetts but the 427’s would give me a good run right up until the last 100 feet then they just died off. Only lost to them if a broke something or spun the tires too much.
