BangShift Tune-Up: “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” by Butthole Surfers (1993)

BangShift Tune-Up: “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” by Butthole Surfers (1993)

As a kid, I wasn’t exactly sheltered. I was allowed to roam pretty much untethered 95% of the time, I was allowed to go and see and do more or less as I pleased. But there were two things that my mother was absolutely against: MTV and more explicitly, Beavis and Butt-Head. The MTV thing was easy enough to explain: I was enamored with music videos and she wanted me to get away from the television set and go out into the real world. Fair enough. Beavis and Butt-Head, on the other hand, probably had more to do her fear that the dynamic duo of dunces would influence my brother and I to smack the crap out of each other and to resolve our differences by kicking each other in the ‘nads. I’d like to say she succeeded in that noble quest, but…well, nope.

Beavis and Butt-Head were a favorite not only because of the low-rent humor, but because they turned us on to many bands we simply hadn’t heard. We were used to the moaning country music that my mother loved and the generic 1970s-1980s rock music that had been a staple pretty much everywhere we lived. We knew hair metal. We knew Run-DMC. We had no idea that there was a band who rocked like this, with a drummer who played like a five-year-old with the kitchen pans while a long-haired lead singer who looked like my uncle’s friend with the beat-up Ford went ballistic with the microphone. Most people only know the Butthole Surfers from their hit song “Pepper”. I hate that song…no, I loathe that song. Hearing it ad nauseum on the alternative stations around the Seattle area for years killed it for me. “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” is the perfect anthesis for “Pepper”: uptempo, rocking, and a bit unhinged. And the video is pure 1990s MTV at it’s finest – mildly disturbing imagery and very creative cartooning. And there’s a hot-rod Ford drag racing a cartoon Death. C’mon, man…it’s a miracle that we hadn’t shown this one yet!

If you have little ones, you might want to think twice about playing the video for them. It’s a bit mental.
