Ebay Find: This 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Is Wild! Four-Wheel steering, Four-Wheel Drive And Still Has The Original Frame!

This Oldsmobile Cutlass is wild. I don’t know how else to properly describe the car that is sitting on eBay right now. From the diamond-plate engine compartment to the radically chopped roofline, it’s difficult to find an area of this car that has not seen attention in one way or another. And the way this car is built certainly bucks the normal trend we see with trars, where a truck frame is substituted for the original frame.

The car started life as a 1980 Cutlass Supreme Diesel, which meant that it came from the factory with the worst punchline GM ever put into a car, the failure-prone 5.7 diesel motor. Not a great start, but the beauty of it is that the diesel can get yanked out and replaced, in this case with a Chevrolet 350ci that’s sitting at a claimed 450 horsepower, sporting a Weiand high-rise manifold and twin Holley 650cfm carbs. The hood has been louvered and the entire engine bay has been trimmed out in aluminum diamond plating. Though, I have to wonder…doesn’t the aluminum plate on the underside of the hood cancel out the louvers?

The frame of the Cutlass was kept, but has been modified to accept a transfer case and a leaf-sprung front axle. Out back, a rear-steer axle has been fitted. which appears to be worked from a custom panel embedded in the arm rest of the bench seat. The Olds sits on 31″ tires, so it isn’t that tall, but the look of the car is exaggerated by the radical roof chop. The actual amount isn’t listed, but roughly 4-6 inches were taken out of the roof to bring it down to a Deuce Coupe-level height.

The owner says the car is a “traffic stopper” and a “show winner”, neither of which we doubt one bit, because it’s not everyday that we see a lifted Cutlass on off-road tires instead of 28″ wheels, let alone one with a lowered roofline and the ability to turn on a dime. The scoop out of the hood might be a strong throwback to the early 1990s but there appears to be a lot of work in this Oldsmobile. If you like to stand out from the rest of the crowd it would be very difficult to top this Cutlass.

Part of me is real curious about putting some regular wheels and tires on it, lowering it, and seeing what it could do on a road course. I’m guessing having to operate the rear steer from the armrest would be a PITA, but I can dream right?

Active four wheel steering systems have never been great for road course cornering performance, they typically add more weight and complexity than you could gain in benefits. Some passive setups work but they’re not using this much steering angle.

That’s probably why he put the tach where he did, that’s where your face winds up. You’d need to be, like, five years old to make those choices, but points for execution.

Somewhere there is an Oldsmobile fanatic having a coronary. Believe it or not, the Olds diesel blocks are sought after for very high performance builds.

Wondering how much of my spine would need to be removed to fit in that, there sure ain’t enough room under the dash for both my legs and half a torso.

I suppose if you lift it 3′ then chop a foot out of the top it’ll still fit in most parking garages.

I remember this car in the southern NY area back in the day. It was quite wild, especially then. There was also a Camaro (69 Z28?) on a Blazer frame running around the Peekskill at that time as well. This thing is wild and has stood the test of time……but not how I’d like my father’s Oldmobile, LOL.

Let me see if I can put this in a way as not to offend…….Kill it with fire and then kill it again!!
