Rough Start: This 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne Is The Cheapest Of The Cheap!

If you had the money and all the time in the world to go hunting for the perfect project car, something tells me that nearly ten out of ten times, you’d head straight for the Southwest. Don’t blame you one bit…the arid, sunny climate has treated many a vehicle well. But here’s a hint: it’s not the only place to mine for classic sheetmetal. The prairies and high deserts running near the Rocky Mountains are often hiding some absolute gems that were parked, left, and are waiting to be rediscovered. But we aren’t looking at a field car today…no, we are looking at something more special. And that’s kind of surprising, considering that this sedan started out as the stripper model.

biscayne-2What we have here is a 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne that somehow managed to not only make it five decades with nearly no major work done at all, but managed to be a full-size Chevy from the early 1960s that lived through the 1990s without being equipped with hydraulics. This Biscayne was the ultimate low-buck example: 230 cubic inch straight-six, three on the tree, manual steering, manual brakes, not even carpet. And it’s only turned 45,000 miles. We wouldn’t even care if that last bit wasn’t true, but it is. Sure, the paint has it’s wear and the interior could probably use some freshening up after fifty-plus years in the sun, but overall? We have a survivor, folks. And one you can get into for three grand. Take the other two thousand of the Rough Start budget, bring the interior up to snuff, do what you can to the outside without wrecking things, and cruise it as-is. Not every Chevy needs to be kicked up to 11, and this Biscayne is a pretty neat cruiser as-is.

Okay, here’s your chance to prove you are a real car guy AND a man. Sell all your other cars and drive this every day. I hope whoever buys it just leaves it alone and enjoys it.

Up until a couple years ago I daily drove a 1969 Dart Custom 4 door similar to this. 225 slant 6, 3 on the tree, manual drum brakes. It was a great little car! As life changes I needed a truck, ended up trading it to a buddy for his Grandpa’s ’86 F150 2wd 300 i6 4 on the floor with compound low. My buddy still has the old Dart, might need to buy it back someday haha.

Finally, someone with some gonads to do a more door. I am personally not a fan of x-frame Chevies but a 1968 Chrysler Newport all done over for long mileage touring would fill the bill . Great to see moredoors

In 1968 as I was leaving high school my dad took me shopping for a car—late at night in Waconia Mn we were looking at a lot and in the back row was a 63 Chev—it was black and I could see it was a 2dr Sedan—-what really caught my attention was the front fender and the crossed flags—-327 three on three sold for $600 my first car—–more to come
