We love a good sleeper around here, and at least Nutting and myself are seriously into GM G-bodies. So when this all-brown 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo popped up in my eBay suggestion feed, I took a look. It’s not a Super Sport and even if it was, 1983 wasn’t the best year power-wise in the first place. The body is brown and looks well used, the pillowy interior is brown…and it’s that shade of brown too. So other than the decent set of Convo Pro wheels, what’s so desirable about this car?
First off, note the dash. If it came from the factory with the dash cluster from the Pontiac Grand Prix, that means that you have a Mexican car on your hands. Then take notice of the tach/shift light. Normally that wouldn’t be a serious giveaway to anything…tons of kids put tachometers into a car that isn’t worth it, but notice that third gauge, the one mounted onto the shift light. Any clue yet?
That right there is a Weiand 144 blower sitting on top of a 355ci small block sporting Vortech heads with 2.02/1.60 valves and a porting job. Backing the boosted small block is a TH350 with a shift kit, a Dana 44 packing 3.73 gears and aftermarket control arms. It’s not too radical but on the street it would be a lot of fun.
In fact, the only thing that concerns us about the car is it’s Mexican heritage. The seller has the Mexican paperwork, but it’s not titled or registered in the United States yet. Being that the car is over 20 years old and it would fall into a related-product situation with the North American Monte Carlo, there shouldn’t really be an issue in getting plates put onto it. Nutting has two Monte Carlos already, his white daily driver and his black project car…maybe he needs a drag car to complete the trifecta.

Its big its brown its stinking up the town…
How anyone would want to spend even one cent on this horrror is beyond me – but hey! – I’m biased….
It’s interesting but the interior needs some help and it definitely needs to be another color
Anybody complaining about the color of this car seriously doesn’t get the sleeper mentality.
In that respect, I’d lose the wheels for some black 15″ steelies, maybe with one or two hubcaps.
It’s a bad time to be broke.
