Pro Street Goodness: All This 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Needs Is A Massive Dose Of Power!

Pro Street Goodness: All This 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Needs Is A Massive Dose Of Power!

I love the big-bodied Mustangs. I love the shape of the front end (which is close enough to the 1969-70 Shelby Mustang for my tastes), I love the SportsRoof silhouette, I love the aggressiveness. And I love the layout of the 1971 Mach 1 stripe package on these cars…it added just the right look to the bulging body. This white example was treated to the Pro Street treatment some time ago, so you have the four-link and narrowed rear in the back, and oddly enough a custom dashboard inside, replacing the Mustang’s standard unit with it’s deeply-recessed main dials. I can’t say I’m in love with the new gauge panel, but the new Painless Wiring system and reliability of Auto Meter gauges will ease that issue.

Unfortunately, there is one let-down: the engine. If you’re gonna run beefy-looking Hoosiers out back, you better have the powerplant to run them with up front, and I have a suspicion that the 302 that is currently sitting in the car right now isn’t up to the task. If this Mustang wasn’t tubbed, the 302/TopLoader combination wouldn’t be a big deal, but if you’re going to have big tires, you need big power. Which would you go for: a blown 351 that can sing to the heavens, or a big-block that will slow the Earth’s rotation upon throttle application?

Love the color combo. Always thought they looked best in white. 351c and a procharger….

Brother bought new a ’71 429scj w\drag pack candy green. Went on to run a final 10.69 @129 in the ’70’s.

If I wanted to stir the pot, I’d suggest throwing an LS into it. But I don’t want to stir the pot…

Since it’ll never run an autocross, some front end weight won’t matter much. How about a big inch Ford Racing big block and a 200 shot for fun. Like the one the “Engine Power” guys are putting in that Mercury.

A Tim Meyer 434 Cleveland with quench 4V heads and a 88mm turbo, that would be quite fun!

Lots of room for turbos under the nose, and fix the dash. Otherwise looks clean and fairly well built.

Stroker cleveland with trick flow heads and one of those 70’s hi rise roots blower kits and it’ll be jus right
