Rough Start: This 1992 Ford F-150 Flareside Is The Perfect First Car

The ideal first car for a brand new driver is a twenty-five year old Ford truck? Yes, it is. In this era of safety first, driving third, this Ford strikes a great balance of what a kid could want and what a parent should want from a first vehicle. We dig these older Ford trucks…the design might date back to 1980, but Ford continually worked on keeping the F-series pickup looking as fresh as possible up until the rounded-nosed 1997 model appeared.

What’s there for the kid? How about an old-school black truck with rear-drive that will have plenty of torque that looks like Grandpa kept it nice and clean? While many will have the urge to turn up the wick on it, pickup truck values aren’t lost on younger drivers…the gaggle of young guys with diesel trucks speaks to that truth. It’s old enough to be cool, not just a hand-me-down or cheap used car.

For the parents, the 300ci straight-six and automatic combination is as good as it gets. There’s no V8 temptation, and if Junior somehow kills that engine, he should get an award of some kind. The truck is robust, parts are still plentiful, and then there’s the price, near as no difference to two thousand dollars, less if you are good at haggling…

You know what? Forget that first-car deal. Let the kid learn to drive in a $2,000 Hyundai. Nobody will miss that car. This Ford is too nice.
