Thunderstang, Part II: This Is How You Properly Combine A Thunderbird And A Fox

Thunderstang, Part II: This Is How You Properly Combine A Thunderbird And A Fox

While I was hunting for the cheap, fast Ford for a Rough Start project a couple of days ago, I came across a car that I almost chose instead, but decided against showcasing because it was a V8. In fact, if it wasn’t for the fact that I had seen Brian’s piece on the early Mustang/early Thunderbird chimera that he posted up, I would’ve forgotten about it. Behold, a less stomach-churning way of creating a Thunderstang:

This 1994 Mustang looks like every other SN-95 street beater on the surface, doesn’t it? Cobra R wheels, flat black paint…meh. The red hood is more of an annoyance than it is notable. But looks are deceiving, because underneath that hood lies the supercharged 3.8L V6 out of a Thunderbird Super Coupe, and it’s a pissed-off little six-cylinder.

From the ad: This has been my project for a few years. Here’s what’s done to it. all the work was done by me being that it’s the result of a mustang and a thunderbird super coupe being fused together, I seriously don’t think there is another car like this one( at least here in AZ) with that being said, complete motor swap from a thunderbird super coupe, 3.8 supercharged. custom tune, power pulley on the supercharger, overdrive jack shaft pulley, ported and polished heads and intake, cold air intake , front mounted intercooler pushing 15 lbs of boost, 3 row aluminum radiator, a/c delete pulley, power steering delete( I have the power steering pump if it’s gonna be an issue) , dual exhaust with high flow cats x pipe with flowmasters, stage 3 six puck clutch , BBK adjustable clutch cable, aluminum quadrant and firewall adjuster, short throw shifter, cross drilled and slotted rotors, rear end out of an 03 GT with 4.10 gears, 255 lpm fuel pump, 30 lbs injectors, BBK lowering springs, battery relocated to the trunk, new tires on the rear 275’s and 235’s in the front, 99 cobra wheels, SCT Custom tune, gauge pods, new front suspension, new spindles, new shocks all the way around and a couple of other things that I can’t think of right now, I’m sure I missed something. The car has no A/C OR HEATER.  I also have the wing and side skirts to go with it.

Honestly, I wouldn’t put either back on the car. I’d leave it in poverty-spec trim and go hunting, and at $3800, the price is right. What do you think?

Unless he has the heads on studs, the question is not if but when the head gaskets will blow. At stock boost levels the 3.8 liked to blow gaskets. It can be prevented with the right parts.

I’ll pass. No AC is fine, but no heater and no power steering? Sounds damn lazy to me.

Agreed on the lack of a heater. The power steering I can see to a limited extent. I wonder with all the trouble why he didn’t go with a 4.2L F-150 V6 swap, I guess since he didn’t mess with the existing pistons he wasn’t going to spring for custom lo comp forgings for the 4.2.

I know I’m weird for this site but I’d want a built auto instead of a manual. Then again I’d want to do this in an LTD or even better a Fox Continental…
