Even with my love for Malaise Mopars, I’ll admit that slapping the Road Runner name onto the Plymouth Volaré was a bit cynical, but to be fair, they didn’t have much else to offer. The RM21 VIN code, the calling card of Road Runners built between 1968 and 1975, was gone and instead, we got a tarted-up Volaré coupe wearing a sporty-looking body dress-up kit and spoilers. If you were lucky enough to get a 360-powered version, you could at least claim to have one of the fastest cars made in the country, but this was the late-70s and that wasn’t exactly a saving grace.
This Road Runner somehow made it’s way to Iceland and has managed to evade the rusting issues that plauged the first-year F-body Mopar…or was well restored. Either way, this Runner is now doing it’s nameplate proud, whipping up on lots of comers while turning low-10s in the quarter. It must be embarrassing to be a Corvette owner that just got beat by the car that many people believe just about single-handedly sank Chrysler…
A drag strip in Iceland? I guess Santa needs a place to run his sleigh in the off season… Always amazed to hear of strips in unlikely places.
Looks like the Vette got him both times but not by much. Notice the folks wearing coats and the flags straight out. I wonder how many weeks they can use that strip?
Weather really isn’t to bad in Iceland, Greenland is the snow cover wasteland.
Comparing a Super Pro drag car to a stock Z06 is as lame as you can get! Try comparing a real ’76 Road Runner which even with the biggest horsepower option ran over 17.00 seconds in the 1/4 mile. What a joke!
This is actually a 1000+hp twin turbo Vette, so the joke is on you Bobby.
The f body is heavily modified, but still an accomplishment to beat a car that is light years ahead in technology.
