Thank you, Joe Haber, for thinking of me when you sent the link to this 1973 Dodge Charger in all of it’s monochromatic black glory. Joe knows that I have a weakness for cars that look like they should be driven by the evil villain in some cheap B-grade flick. That’s not a bad thing at all…it’s just a personality that a car should exude, and there’s plenty of it coming from this Mopar. From nose to tail, it’s sinister, and rightfully so, because underneath that hood is 488 cubic inches of Chrysler V-10. It’s the truck mill, not a Viper block, so in stock form 310 horsepower and 450 ft/lbs of torque are available. Not bad for a straight swap, but the truck V-10 is basically a Magnum 360 with two additional cylinders, so we think that there’s a little more going on.
The trans is the stock 48RH and the rear axle is a worked over Ford 9-inch with a disc brake conversion, so the Charger will stop as well as it goes. The 5″ cowl hood is probably my least favorite part of the car, but if it’s necessary, then so be it. The fiberglass front bumper assembly dropped additional weight off of the nose, and the interior is a mix of stock pieces, fiberglass buckets and a B&M shifter for the automatic.
It’s a unique combination, for sure. But while some may miss the sound of a snotty big-block, my guess is that with some final detailing and a couple more pieces, this Charger will be great. Just think how nice “Procharged V-10” sounds when it rolls off your tongue…
