FCA Has Brought Back The Warlock – Needs More Hemi And More Stakebed!

FCA Has Brought Back The Warlock – Needs More Hemi And More Stakebed!

Call me a little bit suspicious if you must, but there is something quite familiar about the newly introduced 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock. Obviously, the nameplate is a surprise…the Warlock model disappeared after a four-year long model run in 1979, itself being based upon an auto show idea vehicle that was wildly popular when it made the rounds. As part of Dodge’s “fun trucking” idea (I swear to God, that’s in the 1978 press release!) the Warlock was the second of Dodge’s “Adult Toys” lineup, the original Warlock was a kitted-out stepside pickup that could be a two-wheel-drive or a four-wheel-drive and could come with anything from the Slant Six to the 440 cubic inch big-block under the hood. With pinstriping everywhere, including the dash face, wood in the bed and wood stakes on the sides of the bed, the 1970s era Warlock looked special in all of the right ways.

So, to the 2019 Warlock. There are engine choices…you can get the Pentastar V6 or the 5.7L Hemi V8, just make sure you don’t mind the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic. The sport hood can be checked as an option, and you can order it in both two and four-wheel drive. But is it just us, or do you simply see a renamed Rebel? Because outside of the “Warlock” badge on the rear flanks and the missing tread-pattern seats, this seems like a Rebel with a new name. Why go to that length, though? It’s rumored that the Ram Rebel in the newer generation is going to get brought up to Hellcat levels, two potentially. Would it make sense to distance the “Rebel” name from the last-generation truck?

According to FCA, the Warlock is more of a value package play. According to Reid Bigland, the head of Ram: “The Ram 1500 Classic Warlock is proof positive that value never goes out of style. With its sinister monochromatic exterior, award-winning interior and great price, this mean machine is certain to resonate positively with consumers.” Maybe it’s just us, but the Warlock name should’ve brought more of something to the table. Though, if you’ve driven a well-equipped Ram of late, it is difficult to think of what else they could’ve thrown at the truck without the price taking a steep hike as a result.

Prices for the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Warlock start at $35,345, not including a $1,695 destination charge.

Remember that more-door Dodge truck that Hot Rod swapped a 528 into some years ago? Somebody with more money than myself needs to make that happen with this thing, only this time with a six-pack 440.

Seriously 35K for a V6 2wd “Warlock”, these should be way cheaper now that they are trying to push the new body style. I also suspect that the 2018 chevys have radically increased in price after people saw the monstrosity that is the 2019.
