1970 was without a doubt Chrysler Corporation’s year. Just look at the lineup: Dart, Duster, Charger, Coronet, ‘Cuda and Challenger, New Yorker, Three Hundred, and unless you’re truly a die-hard Christine buff, one of the sexiest bodies to ever wear the Plymouth Fury nameplate. The big C-bodies had gotten a new fuselage-shaped body for 1969 and for 1970, buyers had the option of two different front-end treatments: one, a quad-headlight arraignment, and the other the knockout hidden-headlight, single thin vane look that gave the Fury lineup a presence similar to the Charger…a menacing, no-headlight look with a loop bumper that gave the full-size Fury some street credential…or, at least, an impressive face compared to some of the more dowdy offerings in the big-car market.
This particular car is a Sport Suburban…which means that it’s got the hideaway grille, room for nine, big-block power in the form of a 383, the 727 Torqueflite automatic, enough body acreage to qualify as a small building, and enough interior room to count as a micro hotel room. The car was the pet project of a VA Tech football fan who used the car as a tailgate ride, but the guy recently passed on and there’s still some minor stuff to do. Surely, with all of that glass, fixing the air conditioner should be on the list, as would be filling the wheelwells with some rolling stock that doesn’t leave the big Plymouth looking like it’s on tippy-toes.
All large wagons have presence…otherwise known as gravitational pull, thanks to their girth. But this Plymouth, dressed in black and looking this good, has a different presence. Very few muscle wagons were made during this era…but it’s not difficult to see this Fury being one of those very few, now is it?
Sometimes I would catch a ride home from school with a kid that had one of these. His was gold with the quad headlights, plain as the day is long. That was the late 70’s.
Man that things BIG, looks like with the back seat down and a couple of ramps my MGB would fit in there—LOL.
So much want.
Love this! I’ve been looking for a 1970 fury III for some time now. I’m in Northern California. If anyone knows of one for sale or has one, let me know.
Not looking for a turnkey nor a rust bucket. Something in the middle for about 2k.
Thanks! Hopefully this doesn’t offend any terms.
Those are the nicest OEM wheels ever offered. Simple, sporty and elegant without compromise, they look right on anything from a Dart to a New Yorker. FYI: They also fit 5-lug Fords of this era.
One could get a 440 6 Barrel in the Sport Fury in 1970. I wonder if the correct the correct skids were greased a wagon could be had with one?
That rig would be a great start for a one-of-none Sport Fury GT wagon. It would be a pricey project to do right, but it would ooze cool. What’s there? 2, 3 acres of paint maybe. Do it in black and you’d never be out of shape from keeping it pretty.
My ’68 Fury VIP had the 383. That’s plenty of horses to pull this wagon.
What – no baby shit brown paint and fake wood?
A beautiful car let down only be the tiny wheels and tyres.
Man, that is huge. Look at the back windows and overhang, like its been stretched in photo shop. The only reason you can call it “sport” is because you can take your kids to sports in it
