Party Barge: 1,000 Horsepower Worth Of Chrysler New Yorker At It’s Wildest

Long, low, wide and monstrous in every possible dimension, a 1970 Chrysler New Yorker is far from subtle. They are smooth-looking cars, sure…the Fuselage C-body design looked great for 1970 and the New Yorker had the “mature adult” feel to it. This wasn’t a musclecar, but an updated take on a proper big machine: torque to move you, enough horsepower to thrill you without threatening to kill you, but most at home cruising at a respectable speed as the pillow-soft suspension and equally-supple seats kept you from feeling any pain. If you wanted something rowdy and raucous, Plymouth had you covered, even in the big-car game with the Fury GT. Chrysler meant that you were treating yourself to the best that Ma Mopar had to offer, but you weren’t ready to dump serious coin on an Imperial just yet, or didn’t care for it’s flashiness.

Today, outside of demolition derby circles or lowriders, you really don’t see much of 1970s New Yorkers. But we’d love to, especially seeing this footage from a few years back at Bomber Magazine’s Summer End Party in Helsinki, Finland. 528 cubic inches of twin-turbocharged anger underneath that patio most people call a hood will annihilate the tires at 500 horsepower, but this big Chrysler is supposed to be packing 1,700 horsepower and was “tuned down to 1,000 horsepower” for this smokeshow. Throw seven more friends in this big four-door (you know they’ll fit) and it’s a legitimate rolling party!
