Rough Start: Yes, A 1968 Plymouth Falls Into The Rough Start Category, And It’s Not 100% Rust!

One of the reasons that I’ve soured a bit on the traditional muscle-car era vehicles is that in my eyes, they are unobtanium. I’ve bitched before about trying to hunt down an E-body ‘Cuda to build, finding only ragged shells, cars better suited to parts harvesting, or that my bank account is severely lacking. And while aiming for an E-body Chrysler is a bit lofty, many other vehicles from the era can fall into the same category. Would I love something made between 1964-1974? Oh, absolutely, I’ve got a list from each of the American manufacturers that plenty of other people have. Could I reasonably get one that could theoretically drive for a bit while parts are acquired and the plan is created?

Well, if you’re a Mopar fan, I’ve found a small flake of gold while hunting Craigslist in the form of a 1968 Plymouth Sport Satellite. No, not a GTX, not a Road Runner, a Satellite. The story on the car is pretty open: it was taken off of the road in 1978, lived most of it’s life in Nevada, somehow wound up in Oregon, and is now up for grabs. If you think you’re getting away without rust repair, think again…floor pans would be a good bet, and the trunk probably needs to be looked at as well. And if the car has been down that long, we wouldn’t count on the 318 under that hood (that you don’t get) being alive.

But it’s not all bad news. Overall, the body isn’t too bad, the glass is there, the interior is surprisingly decent, and that’s all the hope you should need. The car itself is $4,995, and you’ll not only need an engine bay cover, but you’ll need roller wheels, too…did you really think you were getting a set of Magnum 500s on redlines that easy? This Rough Start isn’t a drive-away deal, but for a project, it’s a find. Our suggestion: spend a couple hundred dollars for a fiberglass bolt-on hood, find the most 1970s mag wheels you can find, and start preparing a big-block and the welder for some work.
