Would You Rather, The Trucks of Mecum Edition! Which Old Hauler Suits You Best?

Would You Rather, The Trucks of Mecum Edition! Which Old Hauler Suits You Best?

The Mecum auction that will go down in Kissimmee, Florida is STACKED with good choices. Seriously. You can buy Dick Landy’s A/FX Coronet. You can buy a Motion GT Corvette. You can buy a 1994 Camaro Z28 if you’re so inclined. There are eight full days of nothing but auction material moving through, and it’s good. Real good. We’ve been digging through the lots seeing what we’d stuff into our dream garage, and we located these two workhorses. Both are going up for grabs on Friday, January 12th and both are clean as a whistle. You get to make the call…which one would you place your bid on?

1. 1970 Dodge W-100 Power Wagon

The Sweptline-series Power Wagon is a bit of a departure from the original-style Power Wagon that dated back to the Forties, but make no mistake, they were still a working Dodge. The running gear was robust, the engines were solid choices, and the interior was everything you needed and nothing you didn’t. This orange and white eye-catcher is a 318/4-speed stepside example, reported to be one of maybe 1,500 made. For a working truck Dodge, it sure looks like they cribbed a color from the High Impact sheet, doesn’t it?

2. 1972 International Harvester 1210

International’s Light Line pickups weren’t popular by any stretch of the imagination…Ford, GM and Dodge routinely stomped them in sales from the moment the series appeared in 1969. But you weren’t going to find a sturdier truck anywhere else. International threw their all at their trucks, which meant that they were built like a brick outhouse and ready to work, no matter what “work” actually meant. Rare to find in a cleaned up condition, this four-wheel-drive 3/4 ton is about as spotless as you get, with a 392ci V8, automatic, and all the cachet that name on the tailgate brings.

Utility in style. Both are lookers and workers. Would be hard to choose if I had the coin. Back in the days when a factory 4wd had rocker panels above the axle centerline.

If not allowed a coin toss to choose….the Binder gets the nod. Nothing empirical about the choice.

  2. Matt Cramer

I’d go with the Dodge – both because I’m a Mopar fan and because of the obnoxious orange paint.
