What On Earth Would You Use A 1968 Checker Aerobus For Other Than A Killer Roadtrip?

What On Earth Would You Use A 1968 Checker Aerobus For Other Than A Killer Roadtrip?

It takes a very special kind of person to drive a Checker of any kind. Composed of GM guts, enough metal to crush the pavement, and a durability not seen since the car-manufacturing side of Checker cashed out in 1982, they are something of a cult classic now. Seeing an old Marathon brings back images of New York City flooded with these 1950’s styled beasts roaming the roadways. But seeing an Aerobus…that’s a freak show, folks, and that’s no joke. Before buses carried you from where you parked to the terminal at the airport, there were “airporter” station wagons, cars with six or eight doors that ferried humans and luggage to the terminal doors. We’ve seen Pontiacs, AMCs and Plymouths that were stretched for airport duty as well, but when you have a reputation for building durable and easy-to-service units that Checker did, creating a car like the Aerobus was a no-brainer.

With literally zero information to provide you other than that the small-block Chevrolet is a 350 cubic inch model, all we have to go on are the provided pictures. We gauge that the car was restored and modded up, we aren’t sure if the interior materials are stock or not, and…well, after that it’s all opinion. Our only concern is that the air conditioner might not be up to the task of supporting that interior, and we’d be hunting down a Duramax for a diesel swap to lug the SUV-heavy wagon (over 5,000 lbs curb weight, for sure) around for any kind of distance. But with room for twelve and looks that are classic and iconic, it might be worth the time and money. What do you think, readers?

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

Sorry, but the one image that stays in my mind is this car filled with blood stained and gibbering psychopaths merrily slaughtering their way around the country for that would truly be a killer road trip……
