(Photos: via Miata Karts of ‘Murica) Ever since it’s 1989 introduction, Mazda’s MX-5 Miata roadster has done nothing but earn praise for it’s handling characteristics. Call it a chick car all you want, but the designers nailed down what makes a balanced roadster: excellent handling, useable power, nimbleness, sharp responses and as little weight as possible. Basically, what Mazda did was copy the basic build concept from British roadster manufacturers and add Japanese reliability. But there’s a niche group of fans who paid attention to one particular British auto legend’s take on what makes a good car: “Simplify, and add lightness.” Those are the words attributed to Colin Chapman, the name behind Lotus Cars. Ok, but what does Chapman’s famous quote have to do with a Mazda Miata?
If you’re fans of Roadkill, “Vette-Kart” is probably on the tip of your tongue, and for good reason: the boys took a clapped-out, flood victim C4, ditched just about everything not necessary to movement, and created a monster. Charles Wickam, BangShift photog extraordinaire, found a group of Miata fans on Facebook that are on the same wavelength. It doesn’t matter if it is an NA, NB, NC, or ND (those are the generational designations), the Sawzall is the penance, the welder and the tubing the salvation. Miata-Karts…for when the standard Mazda Miata is just too damn heavy!
