It’s one thing to spot a nice car in traffic. Maybe you caught a quick flash of colorful paint or heard some good noises a couple of cars ahead and tried to find out what it was. But it’s something else altogether when a car drives by and all you can think of is “What the hell was that?” Your brain immediately tries to figure out what just drove by, and you do your best to catch up, hoping to get a glimpse of the mystery car again.
Right about the time the Roadkill guys were filming the Corvette episode in Bowling Green, I found a local unicorn. It was low, visually thin, and it moved with a purpose. I didn’t see any defining characteristics and because it was late in the day, I couldn’t even make out the color properly…it could have been black, blue, dark green…I had no clue. Even my wife was trying to figure it out and we ended up guessing that it was some kind of weird VW kit that we weren’t familiar with. Two days ago I lucked out and found the mystery car parked in a lot: A Mosler Consulier GTP, a Chrysler 2.2-powered go-kart that was horrifying to look at but was fairly brilliant to drive, being successful in racing before being banned by the IMSA in 1991. Certainly not something you see every day when only 100 cars were produced.
So what have you seen lately that you never expected to see? The rarer, the better…
It was an LFA heading opposite me.
I’d never seen one before and almost didn’t believe the badges in my mirror.
A Tesla Roadster…. I thought they were a myth!
Living in Houston I can say I’ve seen it all, except a Vector and I saw that in San Diego in the early 90s, first and last time I saw one in public
I saw a Porsche 959 in the VIP parking area of a moto GP race at Hockenheim, the rumor is it was owned by one of the soccer players for the Stuttgart team. There was also a guy running a Lancia Stratos in the ADAC Classic rally series I ran in. The owner was really cool and even helped me fix my lowly Mini after the Trier stage. I miss that camaraderie, everyone there was cool.
Two years ago, I saw a genuine 1969 Chevy Camaro ZL-1. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a good pic of it, because of the crowd around it, but I did get to get a shot of that infamous all-aluminum 427
A porsche 917 VW kit car. It’s nose was sticking out from behind the fence of a guy down the road from me. Took me a while to figure out what it was.
I saw the AMC Concept Electron show car from 1977 this morning.
Awesome! I’d love to see that jem! AMC concept cars are rare for sure.
I saw an Alfa Romeo 4C in the parking lot at Kroger yesterday. I wonder how many of those are on the road as of now?
Back in the late fall I was on a motorcycle ride up the mountain here and I saw a dude driving what I believe was Lamborgini Aventador. 700hp V12 sounded amazing even at the low speeds he was going…It’s not rare to see ncie cars out here in nice weather but you just dont see Lambo’s crusing the streets on a regular basis…or ever,
1978 Ford Fiesta.
Mint.
Not a speck of rust.
At a Pick-n-Pull.
In Chicago!
Whoa! That is a unicorn! How did they manage that???
Latest one was a Qvale Mangusta boppin along the interstate in Chicago. Only 284 were built, so that’s pretty rare. Also saw a 91 Corvette ZR1 at a car show this past summer. Not sure if that really counts being at a car show and all, but I’ve only seen a couple C4 ZR1’s, ever.
Enzo at Burger King in Stanwood, Washington. Later found out the guy owns the Ferreri dealer in Seattle.
I saw a restored 69 Yenko Chevelle (one of 99) turning out of a subdivision near my office last summer. I first thought it was a clone until I saw on the Yenko website of the then owner living in same town. Monaco Orange with black vinyl roof, stripes and interior.
I shared a gas station island once with a Countach. I was just out of high school and still driving my mother’s former Oldsmobile. Maybe not a unicorn, but the rarest car I’ve run across outside of a car show.
Only time I’ve ever seen a real Countach was in a car show. Unreal how low it was and how small the tires were height-wise.
I had a friend in High School who’s dad had a Countach. He invented the process for putting pills in the foil backed bubble packaging. It’s funny because he smoked packs and packs of Parliament cigarettes in it and the interior smelled like hell. It’s funny, his son, Jason drove a teal Ford Escort by choice.
I see a 1937 Cord Supercharged Phaeton every day.
I seen a 69 Trans Am, its the only one I have seen in person in my lifetime.
a rust free 80’s 4×4 Toyota T100.
in NY.
1. The only factory original unmolested Hemi Dart I have ever seen is in private hands in South San Francisco — they pull it out and run it a few times a year
2. 1986 Chrysler Executive limousine (1 of 138) — 7 seats, 131″ wheel base powered by a 2.2L turbocharged inline 4
There is an old Comutacar that I some times see in town. Green in color and ugly as all get out.
