As much as modern engines have improved in the last twenty years, it is kind of surprising that we aren’t seeing more of what we are about to show you: in this case, forum member Tardis454 tipped us off to a build thread of a 1989 GMC Jimmy that has been repowered with the 4.2L inline six-cylinder engine from a late-model GMT360 trucks (Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, etc.) Why choose an inline six to replace the 4.3L V6 that this Jimmy came with? The 4.3L is a pretty decent motor on it’s own accord: it’s based on the small-block Chevrolet V8, and can be built up easily. But in stock form, it is a 160 horsepower lump that would need a complete and thorough going-over to be anything worthwhile. Meanwhile, the 4.2L comes stock with 270 horsepower, which trumps even the most powerful factory 4.3L offering. But this Jimmy isn’t stock, not by a mile. The owner wanted 400 wheel horsepower out of the otherwise sleepy little SUV, so a 62mm turbocharger was added on, the 4L60E was beefed up to handle the power, and a combination of a suspension lowering job and a body lift work to make sure the new powertrain clears the sheetmetal. It’s unique, it’s extremely clever, and unlike a V8 S-truck, the inline six’s exhaust wouldn’t give it away until it’s way too late. We love it!
