Rough Start: Splashing Through The Slush In A Ready-To-Go 1993 Ford Ranger Splash

The itch for a four-wheel-drive has been appearing again, as it usually does during the beginning of winter. Taking the hot rod out for snow donuts is fine, but driving it every day when the weather is falling somewhere between “gray” and “cold and sucking” gets old fast. Hence, a decent off-roader with enough power to get through some decent snow with ground clearance, good tires and, depending on where you live and how you drive, the ability to be cheaply repaired should a wintertime accident befall the poor thing.

You don’t get much better than this 1993 Ford Ranger. V6, five-speed, on a mild lift, this Ranger looks good for being a thirteen-year-old truck. Mercifully, the “Splash” trim graphics have been deleted, so the only true tip-offs to that nameplate are the grille, monochromatic paint and the stepside bed, which looks pretty cool on this rig. The step bars are kind of questionable, and those fake pedal appliques have got to go, but you likely can talk the seller down from $4,500 and walk away with a bit of money left over!
