Rough Start: This 1971 GMC Sprint Would Make An Excellent First Car…Truck…Whatever!

Finding a reason to not plonk down the $5,000 you have for a project car on this 1971 GMC Sprint is going to be difficult. You don’t have to make the decision between a car or a truck. You don’t have to pick and choose between having a muscle car and a useable second vehicle. You aren’t going to be out in the cold for parts to fix up what needs to be fixed (except, maybe for the GMC scripts themselves) and you aren’t going to find a cheaper engine to work on that isn’t attached to a lawnmower. It’s not going to be a barnburner, but c’mon…you can’t knock a 350-powered ute, and even the vinyl roof looks good on it.

Five thousand dollars for a car of this caliber seems like a safe bet, but there is always the “what if” factor: what if the wiring is botched? What if the 350 is almost dead? What if this, what if that…here’s the truth: unless the frame is bent or rusted, or there is a rust hole big enough to toss a cat through, this Sprint is repairable, and will always have a good value, just for what it is alone. That isn’t even counting it’s “near a muscle car” status. For once, we are glad to see it left pretty much alone, and other than color-matching the hood to the rest of the body, we’d keep it that way. It certainly beats driving a used S-10, that’s for sure.
