Chassis Fabrication Series #6: Introduction To Welding

Tube chassis race cars, buggies, and trucks can be absolute works of art. The fabrication skill, the fit, the finish, and the little details are what make something that looks like a jungle gym into something that is a finished high performance machine. We’ve already discussed materials choices for tube chassis, how to fit them, notch them, and bend them, but how about connecting all of them together?

The tubes in a chassis rely on triangulation, bends, and welds to create a structure that will protect the driver in the case of a crash. And yet not all of them can do this job very well if not properly welded. Depending on the material, there are two main welding processes for building car chassis, and both involve electricity, gas, and filler material. They are commonly referred to as MIG and TIG.

Watch the video to learn more about both.
