Civil Aviation Math: Goose Plus Cessna Equals Many Giblets

Civil Aviation Math: Goose Plus Cessna Equals Many Giblets

This one might not be for the squeamish, but it’s worth noting right away that neither the pilot nor passenger were harmed beyond probably needing a new pair of underwear. The Cessna 210 flight appears to start ordinarily enough, but shortly into the climb out from DuPage Airport, a regional airport just west of Chicago, some wildlife intervenes. A Canada goose punches a hole in the top of the windscreen and, as you might imagine when getting clobbered at 100 mph, parts of the bird scatter all over the six-seat cabin.

Despite the punctured window and the giblets everywhere, the pilot guides the Cessna back to the field for a perfect landing. The pilot made a second video after they were on terra firma of the interior. While a flock of geese can knock a commercial airliner around a bit, the single 10-pound bird knocked a substantial hole in the windshield and if not for a good chunk of the Canada goose snagging on the roofline, things might have been different. We don’t envy the cleanup required of both the cleanup of the interior and the plane’s occupants, all of which was spackled with low-rent Thanksgiving, was probably considerably less fun.

That said, they both look pretty happy to have made it back to earth in considerably fewer pieces than the poor goose.
