We love cool old photos of gearhead stuff and we’re also enamored of our pal Drag Racing Hall of Famer Dave Wallace, so imagine how stoked we were to intercept a recent email that included not only two photos of Dave’s ’69 Road Runner that he bought new but also a brief recollection of the car. Here’s what he had to say:
“Here are possibly the ONLY two surviving photos of the four-speed, Torch-Red Road Runner, on the line at ‘Fernando and in the driveway of my Van Nuys rental house, late ’68 or early ’69. I was pretty disappointed about not breaking into the 14s, but the best it ran (without a 2-3 power shift) was 15.0s at 96 mph — on skinny Uniroyal Tiger Paws, of course!
My dad had promised to make the payments and drive the car if/when I got drafted (July ’69, at 19), but my mom had different ideas, so I was forced to sell (to that rich son of an attorney — who had a college deferment, the prick! — as mentioned previously). I’ve always regretted letting my all-time-favorite car get away.”
