Perhaps we should change the name of this column, because “deal” probably can’t be used in the context of this weeks’ pick. Just for kicks, we decided to search CraigsList just for really expensive cars to see if people are still on a tv-auction-driven buzz to strike it rich. Turns out they are: we searched only for cars over $100,000 and got too many results to wade through. Upping it to a $200,000 minimum weeded down the auctions to those with price typos and for some Lambos and Bentleys and Corvettes. Seeking more street-machinish stuff, the pricy ones (not surprisingly) were found on each coast with not so many heady prices stemming from the heartland.
Our final pick came from close to home in Cali, and here it is: a ’56 Chevy for just $235,000. The ad claims it’s a Car Craft cover and poster car, though we can’t recall seeing it. Is $235,000 a bargain compared to what it would cost to duplicate this car? And will anyone pay that much for a smoothie ’56 with a carbureted small-block? Stay tuned next week when we relieve you of these burdonsome questions and return to our beater programming.
