Craigslist Find: A Cheap Former SCCA Third Gen Camaro That’s Begging For Some Track Time!

Craigslist Find: A Cheap Former SCCA Third Gen Camaro That’s Begging For Some Track Time!

Last week, we asked you what you thought the automotive equivalent of a mullet is.  A good number of you responded by proclaiming that the Third Generation Camaro was in fact a Tennessee Mud Flap in car form, and I’m not one to argue. It’s no secret that I love Third Gen Camaros. I often dream of building a totally 80’s purple IROC so I can cruise around and blast Dokken and Ratt out of the ERS Sound System with the T-Tops off. There’s no denying that they are in fact “mullet machines”, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t perform! Back in their prime, these cars, with a little bit of modification, were true performers on the track as well. Even before GM offered the vaunted 1LE performance package, there were plenty of 80’s Camaros doing battle on tracks all across America. This 1985 Z28 is one of those cars, and it’s for sale at a very reasonable price. Check it out!

What we have here is a 1985 Z28 that has been modified to compete in the SCCA’s AS class. The “AS” stands for American Sedan. Per the SCCA’s website: “American Sedan® (AS), comprised of Chevrolet Camaros, Pontiac Firebirds and Ford Mustangs, are production-based chassis with modified suspensions and brakes. Engines are carbureted 302 and 305 CID V-8s that have been balanced and blueprinted.” It’s basically in “as raced” form, but has a few issues which we will talk about in a minute. It hasn’t been on track since 2002 according to the ad.

Condition-wise, the car is not too bad. The body appears to be intact and rust free, and yellow Third Gen Camaros are especially cool. If it were mine, this would be repainted in purple and/or teal for a completely 80’s look that would be sure to garner a few chuckles. You can get away with that with a Camaro.

The Camaro needs a windshield, but this should be easy to procure from any junkyard in the US. Honestly, that’s just about the only exterior flaw with this car.

Per SCCA rules, cars in the AS class needed to have a balanced and blueprinted V8 that could not displace more than 305ci. This one has reportedly been built to those specs, and has some decent go-fast bits. It’s said to be in non-running condition, but since it’s a small block Chevy, you could probably get it to fire up with a few minutes of your time and about $5 in parts. Or, if you don’t plan on bringing it back to AS duty, toss whatever you want in there and go!

Inside, the car has been gutted because, well, it’s a race car! The driver’s seat is a mess, and all that’s left is the frame, so that should be replaced. And yes, this has three pedals and you will be rowing your own courtesy of a Borg Warner 5-speed transmission, according to the seller.

Another shot of the inside shows the full cage that was installed in this beast way back when. It would probably need re-certification at this point to be track legal, but it looks decent. And hey, the floors are all there! That’s a big plus.

Here’s a shot of the car on track back in it’s prime. With some work and a bit of luck, this Camaro should be able to turn laps in anger once again.

Here’s what the ad says:

What’s the price for admission for reliving 1980’s glory with the racecar version of a Kentucky Waterfall on wheels? Just $1000. A GRAND!!!

I can’t think of a better way to spend $1000, especially if you are looking to get into racing on the cheap. And while this thing has been absent from track duty for the past 14 years, it looks to be a few weekends-worth of wrenching away from blasting through the twisties on your local track or autocross. It seems to have all the right ingredients for a decent track car that you could campaign at local events, in a racing series like the 24 Hours of Lemons, or even the Grassroots Motorsports $2016 Challenge.

Let us know what you would do with it below!

I have no idea how I’d tow it from Columbus to Georgia, but I’m genuinely tempted to try. I’d use it for autocross, track days, American Sedan events, probably the GRM Challenge too.

I can tow it from Ohio to NC if I had the room! I’m surprised the car is still advertised. That would be perfect running at VIR which is only 2 hours from my house.

you couldn’t get a cage installed for that price. Amazing deal, as long as you can get it certified…
