This is far beyond the normal Craigslist find we show at BangShift, because instead of finding a low-buck budget ride or something that pegs the “WTF?” meter, this one is one of the high-dollar but worth it selections that normally do not appear on CL without a bit of skepticism involved. Normally, that might be something we would pass on, if it weren’t for the vehicle in question.
According to the ad, this is the fourth AMX/3 prototype car, the one that was displayed at the Turin Auto Show in Italy. After the plan was 86’d, the cars were eventually sold, except two that AMC’s Dick Teague kept, and one, nicknamed “Provo” (“tester” or “test-drive” in Italian) owned by the Italian side of the AMX/3 team, Giotto Bizzarrini. Over the years the histories of the cars became mixed, which is normal. What is known is that this car has been owned by the same individual since it was sold, has been in Indiana since at least 1984, and that the owner claims to have all of the original documentation with the car.
Recently the AMX/3 was taken down to bare metal in preparation for a restoration, but the owner has decided to part ways with the car instead. The ad claims that all of the parts are present and accounted for. The running gear is stout: An AMC 390 mounted midships, hooked to an OTO Melara four-speed transaxle, running through 3.90 gears made for a car that could run with a DeTomaso Pantera all the way up until the wild bodywork created it’s own lift and proceeded to scare the hell out of the driver.
There’s a good reason why there isn’t a price on this ad…a bonafide AMX/3 is worth serious coin, and if all the statements in the CL ad are spot-on, you’re looking at a car that with a small investment, will have a huge return. I hate the idea of flipping a car for profit, so it’s a hope of mine that the owner is a bit realistic with the price, so that someone who can afford to put this rare American Motors effort back together properly ends up with one of the rarest, and baddest, AMC products ever brought out by the otherwise frugal company.

Oh Mr Leno! Still have a slot in the garage?
I’d always heard that there were six AMX/3s, five Series 1 cars and one Series 2 car.
YOU sir, are correct.
SIX
Teague, (guy in charge, drove red for months, then had painted YELLOW.
HIS favorite color, NOT AMC lemon…
Transmissions hardest part, held up production attempt at 5 (five) of FIRST.
Guy from Atlanta George Doughtery, an S C C A fan, resto, driver, competitor in Gremlin sixes (cool loud…LIGHT), got Teague’s yellow.
SOLD well @ 70-80K in ….after CAR REVIEW two page PHOTO /article.
I framed all, photographed hard at Atlanta Regional A M C show…displayed with my Yellow (same) A M X.
Family tossed with X blocks . . . etc.
I remember my mom took me to a AMC dealer to see this car when I was a kid!
It had the huge WOW factor, on a kid!
…. and yet another of the great American ‘ Would of Could of and damn well should of …. but didn’t ‘ riddling the US automotive industry …. and a moment of shame … not pride in my opinion
Sad thing is … to this day still …. none of the Big Three has learned the lessons of a very misspent past … repeating the same damn mistakes over and over again … putting out the same old dreck … all while leaving the moments of genius to the relegation bin
But to end on a positive note … this one was a stunner … too bad AMC had its head so firmly tucked up its posterior back then when it came to doing something with it
Brilliant comment from deep up your own.
Ever heard of a little company called after guy’s last name ?
Henry F O R D ?
Sees A M C clays from Italy…
FORD Pantera cost quote at 12 K…
Teague canks project at 6…
I got to see one in person at the small, but unique collection at the auto museum in Balboa Park San Diego. It reminded so much of the Pantera, a lot of similarities.
I like what was said in the CL ad, “with a $50k full rebuild, would be in a class all by itself.” Yea right, more like $250K.
Five million asking price. And yeah there is no 50k rebuild on that car.
HOLY…I didn’t see the asking price, but if that’s the case, no way on the coldest day in Hell.
For $5m I’d rather buy 100 solid Panteras…..or a few GT40s with LeMans history. It is certainly the best looking rambler ever built, but still…
POINT. 5 / 6 vs mass produced vs Lemans winner replicas.
Once in a life time chance!
if I were to spend 5 million on a car (and survive my wife’s murder attempt), I’d want something that people won’t say “you spent how much for Wayne’s car?”
This one just hits all my AMC buttons! If I was like a Bill Gates type that might be reasonable, but 5 Mil that is almost insane. I think you could buy a casino for 5 mil, or like a Boeing 747 or something. I guess I’ll have to settle for a replica when the guy who was making them gets it off the ground.
5 million is a DEPOSIT on a Gulfstream V…NOT a 747.
This is a functional prototype of 5 that look, FUNCTION as this.
JAY only American with KNOWLEDGE, SKILL as MASTER MECHANIC to OWN, OPERATE this, lives in state with highways BUILT for this.
IS American / Italian….as THIS
German COULD pay for, AUTOBAHN is adequate, but goes …where ?
Much as your comment.
Apparently aircraft are quite expensive. At my pay rate I think a set of tires for my truck are expensive. So you got me there. You lost me with the rest though. Either I’m drunk, you’re incoherent, or a combination of both. 5 mil is still a chunk of change. I hope Jay buys it and fixes it up.
I would pick it up, but its a bit to far away. The Twilight Zone is much to far to go for a car, no matter how beautiful it might be.
