Comfort And Speed: 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII Is Hiding Nitrous And A Six-Speed

Comfort And Speed: 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII Is Hiding Nitrous And A Six-Speed

What was the car you aspired to own as a kid? Did you want a poster car, like a Ferrari or a Porsche? Were your eyes already set on the classics of the day? Did you want the closest thing to a Stompers toy you could legally title and license for street use, or maybe you were the kid who couldn’t get a CDL fast enough so they could be the trucker burning down the miles of interstate. Everybody has their cue. But some want a blend. Take a kid who wants the monster truck and some muscle in their world…and that’s where Ryan Anderson came from. A poster-car kid who likes the high life? Every Range Rover owner. A pretty cruising machine? Lowriders, the good ones with the “oh my God” paint and the dead-on perfect interior.

I grew up caught between the worlds of rowdy-ass musclecars and my grandpa’s taste for leather interiors, quiet cruising and just a touch of style. No, that doesn’t explain my weird Mopar kick…you can thank my older cousin for that. No, that’s why I dig more upscale nameplates. Buick Gran Sports, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Mercury Cougar, those cars. A little something to enjoy, more than just a taxicab with a honker under the hood.

Something like this 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII. The bones root to the Ford MN-12 platform, so there’s independent front and rear suspension. There was also a Mod motor standard, which means that if it works for a Mustang, it works for a Mark. You know what didn’t normally work for a Lincoln, though? Look inside and note the shifter sitting bolt-upright in the console, or the red toggle switch just below the audio equipment. No Lincoln of this era came with a six-gear standard, so already we’re impressed. But what about that switch?

Do you see what we see? That’s right…the Mark VIII is a bottle baby! Add in the airbagged stance, the rolling stock and the Mustang Terminator front facia, and you have our full and undivided attention. Power and comfort? It’s all here.

One of the most attractive and under appreciated body styles ever. Always considered these cars as exceptionally good looking, so it’s nice to see that this builder has at least given it some love and done it justice. Wonder if there is a build thread on this somewhere? Would like to see the details on the manual trans swap as I doubt that was easy. Integration into the console looks factory. Beautiful build and mega kudos to the builder(s). I can only assume that there is MUCH more invested in this project than the asking price reflects.
