Okay, so maybe you can’t make anything a Z28, but you sure can make your hot rod feel like one. This Craigslist ad from the DFW area is for a nearly complete DZ302 Chevrolet. For those of you not familiar, the 302 Small Block Chevrolet, which was only available in 1967, 1968, and 1969 Z28 Camaros, was renowned for spinning to astronomical RPM, sounding pissed off as hell thanks to the Duntov designed 30/30 camshaft, and making way more power than it’s Chevrolet claimed 290 horsepower. And while there were differences in the 302 between ’67 and ’68, “the one” that everyone talks about is the ’69 only DZ302. Does it make more power than the previous years? Not really. But it has some strength improvements and a few other tweaks that make it slightly different than the ’67 and ’68 models.
As a guy that grew up with a 302 in the family, there is a part of me that would love to snag this and throw it into my ’69 Camaro convertible in front of my 4-speed and call it bitchin. But alas, it is out of my price range. That doesn’t mean it’s expensive thought. At $1750 asking price we think that’s a pretty fair sounding deal. The engine block has been cleaned and prepped for rebuild, and the crank and heads have been cleaned and magnafluxed and are ready for machine work. Original rods and .030 over TRW pistons are included. Based on the ad, you will need a little machine shop work to have it ready to go, but not much, and ad an intake, carburetor, and ignition and you are good to go.
Charles Wickam sent us this ad, telling me to let my dad know, since he is the resident Z28 guy, but I figured I would share it with all you BangShifters out there. Sure you can build a 302 cubic inch small block on your own, but there is something romantic and cool about owing one direct from Chevrolet.

Why is there no pic of the DZ stamping on the block?
Back in the ’80’s, I worked for a guy who had a 302 Camaro with 4:56’s in the rear end.
I had the opportunity to drive it a few times.
It was really something else.
Wow,
This guy wants 250 less for a gunkier engine.

It’s like the old saying goes, “A poncho for a house, a dad for a story.” I don’t know why that’s so hard for you all to understand 😉
hahahaaaa. of course. excellent.
I have a completely freshened DZ 302,….complete from carb to pan…..but it is all I could find @ the time…..what I really need is an MO 302 for my 68 Z-28. Does anyone know where I could find one of those ? Ya I know…lots of luck right. Worse comes to worse ….guess I will have to put the DZ in it.
Hey Anonymous, I’ve got a 68 Z/28 “MO” blk!
Not to mention …that DZ cost me both arms and both legs
