Since we are currently working on our own 1966 Chevrolet Station Wagon, although ours started life as a 283 and Powerglide equipped Bel Air model, we got super excited when we saw this rare SS396, 9 passenger, Impala SS Wagon for sale on Craigslist. It’s in Medford Oregon, so our buddy Ronnie Mankins has seen it, and it looks super clean and straight. I’m disappointed that it has the TH400 automatic, rather than the fun to row 4-speed option, but given the rarity of an SS396 Wagon, having a 4 speed would have been asking a lot we think. This one does include a lot of original parts, including the alternator, and has been repainted and the interior redone recently.
The coolest thing on this car though is the factory Air Leveler option, which is ultra rare when combined with the fact that this is a 9 passenger SS396 wagon. It makes it ultra cool though, not only because it is rare, but also because we are putting Ridetech’s Street Challenge Air Ride system on our own wagon. Rare is cool, but high tech will be even better.

A friends parents had a Kingswood wagon (think lots of woodgrain) with the same engine/trans combo. Fun to take out cruising with your buddies, won a lot of races with that car.
Ya got me, Chad. What makes this wagon an SS?
I can’t see even one piece of SS indicia, ‘cept possibly the wheel covers, which I can’t expand enough to see the center emblems.
I mighta been sold, already. I can’t find the ad.
Very simple, there were no 1966 SS wagons.
Have a nice day,
J.B.
In the sixties big travel trailers were a thing with car salesmen. They would order out a wagon with everything including the biggest motor. Surprising this one isn’t a Caprice. My brother in law had several with 427s and 454s. A new one every year. Look for scars from mounting big tow mirrors.
The SS option in ’65 and ’66 was nothing more than a trim option. Had nothing to do with engine size like the Chevelles. You got bucket seats, console, floor shifter (Unless it was a column shifted 3 spd manual) full gauges and SS emblems and hubcaps. This one has the hubcaps.
A big block 9 pass wagon, with very little other options is interesting. No AC, no power options. But, he had auto leveling in it. Could’ve been to haul a camper.
Agreed, there is no such thing as a 1966 Impala SS wagon.
That aside, that is a WAY cool car. Looks like the perfect method to push start a slingshot dragster.
Cut Chad some slack man. He saw this car and got a woodie there for losing some blood from his big head and made a slip calling it a SS. Case closed!
got a customer of mine has a 66 impala wagon, with a factory ordered 4 speed (remember when dealers let you pick and choose on your options, instead of having to choose preferred groups)—-he wanted an ss,but needed the room for his family!
I remember back in the mid ’80’s seeing a 1966 four door Caprice with the 396 emblem on it owned at the time by the original owner.
Back in the 60’s, you could get almost any BB for the Impala/Caprice. I’ve even seen some 2bbl 396 Caprices!
The one and only Chevy SS wagon was the 1973 Malibu SS Station Wagon. Available with either a 350 or a 454.

The Wagon got traded for an old Suburban.
Don’t you realize that all things Chevy are SS. No other models allowed….lol.
It is almost enough to make you want to puke.
I have a 1966 Caprice wagon-9 passenger-396 turbo 400-12 bolt posi-a/c tilt/ telescope column-cruise control- rear air leveler- roof rack & rear bumper steps & it is a 64,000 mile original woodgrain wagon
They never made an ss it was meant to pull boats out to the lake which is why it had a big block. Still this is cool, I would put a chevelle ss front end on it with the rims
Joe, you’d be hard pressed to succeed.
The Chevelle is an A-Body car, several inches narrower, for one.
The wagon is a B-Body car, just larger all around.
Maybe just badge-up the wagon with SS stuff and start tellin’ lies ’bout its rarity.
As knowledgeable as Bang Shift is, I’m surprised that you would post such nonsense as an SS Chevy wagon. It seems enough people have called you out on this, so I won’t repeat the same stuff…………….. Clean up your accuracy, Guys……………..
@ Joe, well of course, like every plan jane Camaro and Chevy Malibu ever.
