From the moment I started to understand platform sharing, I couldn’t understand why one version was more expensive than the other. A Fox Mustang versus a Fox Thunderbird, or a Chevrolet Caprice versus a Pontiac Catalina, for example…more often than not, the Ford or the Chevrolet would take the crown and hold the value while the sibling brand would suffer. There are exceptions to the rule (See: Oldsmobile Cutlass) but the smart shopper should at least entertain the idea of shopping just off of the main path in order to save a buck or two, if not to be different.
This brings us to a 1968 Mercury Montego MX. The Ford Torino’s cousin, the Montego didn’t have the best run…more often than not, the word “ugly” gets thrown around, especially after 1970, when the front end developed some kind of sinus problem that just wouldn’t go away. The 1968 model year car didn’t have nearly that kind of problem…instead, it looks like a full-size Comet, and that is a good thing. Don’t get too wound up about finding a “muscle car”, it’s a 302 with a C4. You could get the same setup in a 1979 Mustang Cobra, though this one should have a bit more bite to it. We aren’t here to poke holes at the car, though. For $2,700, this is a cool machine in the making. The lines are sweet and even if you just polish it up a bit, clean up the interior and drive it as-is, you’ll have a handsome car on your hands. You could do a hell of a lot worse…like a 2006 Montego!
That front end looks a little light–is the motor out? Still, a cool car…
They may have been ugly but you could get all the same hi po stuff in them as a fairlane or torino . and some police depts had more door q ships
