Hemmings Find: The Raybestos Racing Giveaway GTO Is Already For Sale! Come On People!

Despite all the incorrect information in the ad, this car is super bad ass. It was built using all of Raybestos’ cool NASCAR race brakes, a kick ass 700 hp Chevy Performance LS454, a Tremec T-56, full unibody tube chassis setup from Hot Rod Chassis and Cycle that features their custom Corvette based front suspension, and much much more. We don’t know why, but it annoys us when people win stuff just to sell it. I know they have had it for a year and all that, and I don’t know their situation, but to me getting a car like this is like adopting a dog. If you are moving and they tell you that you can’t bring the dog, YOU DON’T MOVE THERE!

Okay, I’m done. The car is for sale on Hemmings for $78,000 OBO and was appraised at $80,000. It would cost at least double that, and quite frankly probably triple that, to have someone build this car again. The car has great history, killer video, and would look unFingbelievable living under my ass and right foot. Too bad I can’t afford it. Unless they’ll take a check. Hmmmmmmm.

Maybe . . . just maybe . . . they’re going to use the windfall to buy a nice GTO with a REAL: Pontiac V8 (and not RUINED with an @#$%# LS)

    Or maybe they’re going to score 390 $200 Suburbans . . . .

Yea…Even as they were building and giving this thing away, I wondered how it would be received as a real world car. I mean, no average Joe really wants a car that is only suited to showing. We don’t have the time or money to cart it around and show it. We want a car we can drive and enjoy. I know it was a promotional thing for Raybestos; and that, as such, making it an extreme ride is understandable… and God bless them for giving it away; but who wants to drive it around with all those graphics? Further, how practical is a real world car with injector stacks sticking through a hole in the hood ? And when it needs service, where is local mechanic that can work on it ? I would be selling it too, as soon as it was possible.

I’d drive it with the graphics, how’s it any different than flames down the side of a hot rod?

As for the ease of repair, as far as the engine goes, it’s an LS, anyone who can’t fix an LS isn’t a mechanic. Tremec T-56s aren’t hard either. As far as the powertrain goes it’s pretty simple. The race brakes might be hard, but I’m sure if you got on the phone with Raybestos and told em you owned the GTO they’d give you the VIP treatment and hook you up with pads and rotors no problem.

It’s a good thing Chovey engines are easy to fix. that’s all ya can do with them.
That or use them for boat anchors.

wait….” And when it needs service, where is local mechanic that can work on it ?” uhhh, and you’re on Bangshift?? I think you may have strayed onto the wrong site…. try searching ` I need a mechanic to fix my Prius ‘ in Google and see how you go…

$78,000 would go a long way to get someone out of date, or a down payment on a house.

The other problem for many who win expensive prizes is the value of the car is considered income by the IRS. So, you would have to pay $80,000 more income. If you only make $30,000 a year, that is a big tax bill.

Someone asked me what I would do if I had won a new Corvette I entered to win. I said I’d drive it for a little while, then sell it so I could by a house.

Can’t really blame the guy for getting rid of it. I wouldn’t want to get stuck with a Pountiac either. They’re the only car that’s worse than a Chubbie.

If I won it I’d be on my 3 rd set of tires by now! If you don’t want the car don’t enter the contest!!!! Very simple.

I’ve met Kevin Tully, who built this car. Bob Chiluk and I toured his shop. He builds cars to drive, not to baby, or cart around on a trailer. You couldn’t duplicate this car for the asking price. Don’t like the graphics? So take them off. Don’t like the Chevy engine? GM put plenty of Chevy engines in Pontiacs, just not in 1964. I’ve seen this car in person all over Chicago, it’s flawless.
