Money No Object: A Restomodded Bus Conversion?! This 1965 Silver Eagle Is Awesome!

Money No Object: A Restomodded Bus Conversion?! This 1965 Silver Eagle Is Awesome!

Restomod…LS-swapped musclecars, hot rods with 350ci V8s in place of flathead six cylinders, an old Mustang with a Coyote swap. Take old, update with new, and have classic looks and modern performance. It’s always a good idea, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. For example: who in the hell restomods an old bus? That’s asking a lot out of what is probably the most mundane of commercial vehicles. We aren’t talking a bus conversion, where the seats get ripped out and it’s turned into a budget RV. That’s easy enough. We mean a full-kill build like this 1965 Silver Eagle Model 01, from stem to stern, that includes an updated powertrain and the addition of a slider unit. That’s something we just weren’t expecting to see.

Where do we begin? The 13.5 foot by 3 foot hydraulically powered slider unit should take forward mention, since it involved the most modification to the bus, or the entire interior setup that includes blackout window screens, a pull-out couch, solid oak desks and tables, three air conditioning units, a central vacuum system, a full size shower and toilet, a full bedroom area, and more that we simply would need all day to describe. There’s the 100 gallon fresh water tank and the 65 gallon grey and 65 gallon black water tanks, a 37-gallon propane tank, solar panels, an inverter and an Onan generator, freshly serviced. But we’re sure you want to know about this engine swap deal…no problem. A 1990 Detroit Diesel Series 60 was yanked from a fire truck and installed, along with all of the gauges and is sitting at 174,xxx miles on the clock. An Allison 741 five-speed auto handles shifting duties and the rear axle is geared out to 3.36 for highway cruising, eking out 8.1 MPG, or a range of about 1,200 miles. A Ross power steering setup with a tilt steering wheel gives the driver some comfort, and the tires have about 7,000 miles on them.

Plenty of racers have neat rigs, but a classic with modern touches? Not so much.

WOW–like it (could get over the paint)—actually might be reasonably priced ( new ones this size are large dinero)

Didn’t want us to know you are a bus nerd? That’s ok, you’re not alone. I dig buses. The restoration work on this one is amazing. Did anybody see Johnny Cash’s tour bus at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? They even let us walk in for two bucks, totally worth it!

A guy (late) I use to work with years ago took a Greyhound Seniccruiser, put a swing up door in the back and hauled a Corvette in to display the car covers they made and sold. They would load all the compartments with covers and head to Carlyle, etc.

That’s a great rig, nicely done. Very nicely done, in fact. But, it has a big drawback. There’s no actual “shotgun” seat. A great deal of the joy of the kind of open road travel this rig invites is in having your gal riding along right beside you. It’s a truck that would easily lay down an 800 mile day, but it would be almost like doing it solo.
