Ramp Truck Nirvana: Dodge Or Ford, We Have Both Right Here! And With A Cotton Owen’s Connection

Ramp Truck Nirvana: Dodge Or Ford, We Have Both Right Here! And With A Cotton Owen’s Connection

I grew up at Fremont Drag Strip seeing Don Wann’s Rettig Brother’s Racing crew cab Dodge ramp truck at every event. It not only hauled a car, but also pulled an open trailer, and if it had been a Chevrolet it would have been the coolest truck possible to me back then. And I still love ramp trucks. Now I’ve gotten a little more accepting of other brands, at least on the surface, so I’d own either of the examples that my buddy Dannie Pinard sent to me last night. These suckers are bitchin!

I’ve been doing everything possible to get Dannie to spend his money on one, but since Crosby and I have been so good at getting him to spend money on his cars lately, I think he’s tired of listening to us. Or at least tired enough that he’s not actually spending, but still window shopping for the day that the bank account comes back around I guess.

Check out both the Ford and Dodge below. Which one is your favorite?

Here Is All The Info On The Dodge

The last Dodge trucks ever to be made that were bigger than a 1-Ton were in 1977 and here is a Very Rare and Special Opportunity for you to own what maybe the Coolest and most Unique Dodge Truck you’re ever going to see!

Dodge Ramp Truck 1

This Awesome 1977 Dodge D-700 Custom Race Car Hauler was Custom built and owned by the Legendary Stock Car Driver and Race Team Owner Cotton Owens!

Dodge Ramp Truck 3

Cotton built this truck for his own personal use in 1987 starting with a 1977 D700 Cab and Chassis then extending the frame to a 240″ wheelbase then installing a 1980 Club Cab section using the original D700 front clip.

Cotton used the 413 engine and the 5-Speed transmission from his D800 Race Car Hauler to put in this truck and used a 2-Speed Hi-Lo Rearend.  He also designed and built the 23’X8′ Hauler bed and installed the twin 100 Gallon Aluminum gas tanks and the newer style 10-Lug 22.5″ Polished Aluminum Budd Wheels.

Cotton used this truck often over many years before selling it to his buddy and fellow Winston Cup driver Neil Castles in 1996 who used the truck in his business transporting cars for the motion picture industry until selling it in 2010.  I’m still trying to find out if Cotton originally sold this truck to his good friend Marty Robbins (The Country Singer / Part time Winston Cup Driver) before buying it back at some point and then later selling it Neil Castles.  At least this is what Neil has told me.

1964 Ford C550, Vintage Cab Over Car Hauler/Ramp Truck

Ford Ramp Truck 2

Could be a fun vehicle to get road worthy and haul your vintage race car or street rod. It is certainly not perfect, but you have a lot to start with.

  •         350 Chevy engine
  •         Turbo 400 Chevy transmission
  •         Newer 9r 22.5” front tires
  •         Bud 5 split rear wheels, 7.50×20 tires
  •         Working winch
  •         Aluminum ramps
  •         Lights all work
  •         Starts, runs, lot driven (bad brakes)
  •         Several side boxes
  •         Functional interior
  •         Some body rust (see photos), but not awful

I know, it’s a small block CHEVY powering it. It’s okay, set down the sharp objects Ford guys. You can easily swap it to something else. Maybe an FE? Or a PowerStroke?

Ford Ramp Truck 7

I’m intrigued by the giant coil springs that help “ease” the cab forward on this thing. They are super cool looking, and a feature I didn’t remember them having. I always loved these COE trucks, Ford or otherwise, but the Fords were special because they were in every single episode of CHiPs when I was a kid.

Dodge all the way. Drop in a 24 valve Cummins then load up anything you can afford with the money left over.

I’ll take the Dodge! Cotton Owen is a smart guy to swap in an x-cab body for a little more comfort traveling the open road!

The Ford has Chevy power, is rustier and those C-cabs aren’t that rare. I’ll take the Dodge instead.

WTF is the sbc doing in that Ford? Just doesn’t seem like enough?
    I’d take the Dodge!!!

The Dodge is too new. Yeah, the ford has a sbc, but FE’S are every where. I’m down for the ford, even with the crusty rusty.

I’m diggin’ the huge 23′ long ramp on the Dodge, lots of room for your race car and a golf cart and everything else, and it’s a pretty good looking truck. As for the Ford, very cool old school truck and I have no problem putting Chevy power in it, but I would at least make it a big block, with a race car back there going up some hills on that big truck it’s gotta be hurtin’, it could use the torque of a big block…

Bring back old memories of Fremont when you mentioned Rettig Bros car hauler, enjoyed watching the rigs coming in as much as the racing action.
