If you have ever rebuilt an engine in your garage, you know that it can sometimes be messy but making sure all the new or rebuilt parts are clean and ready to be installed is key to making the job smooth and easy. But just as important is making sure that the engine block that those parts are going into is clean and ready as well. That means no old oil or metal or corrosion in passages and no dirt and grime that can find its way into oil galleys and cause issues for new bearings.
In this video from Jefferson at Red Dirt Rodz, he goes over the right ways to clean and engine block, including some cool tips and tricks that will help you clean and prep your block at home.
Video Description:
Cleanliness is next to godliness in the world of engine building. Jefferson has a 2015 L83 5.3 Liter in the shop getting a complete rebuild in prep for install with some turbos. The engine had a lifter get sideways and it through shrapnel throughout the oiling system. Before rebuilding any engine, cleaning every surface and passage is a critical step to a good rebuild.
Jefferson shows you to do it in detail, including brushing the galleys and breaking the glaze on the cylinders with the correct 3-stone hone (Bottlebrush hones don’t show any irregularities in the cylinders!), and pressure-washes the engine block before showing you couple tricks to drying out the engine.
