While Chad was running his mouth at the worlds hottest Goodguys autocross this past weekend in Columbus Ohio, John Jackson from Not Stock Photography was taking killer photos and lent us a few to help tell the story. Not only was the competition at the Goodguys 15th PPG Nationals fierce, but BangShift sponsors were out in force, and still own the points lead. The Columbus Goodguys event features all kinds of cool events within the event, including the Optima Batteries Street Machine of the Year Competition, Goodguys Autocross Sponsor Shootout, and Sunday’s Street Rod, Truck, Street Machine, and Pro Autocross Shootout. We even have video of the Final round in the Sponsor Shootout on Saturday at the bottom of the blog item.
On Friday we saw all the Street Machine of the Year competitors flogging their junk out on the autocross course, where most take it easy and some don’t give a crap. But Saturday’s Sponsor Shootout was the big deal highlight that most folks were waiting for and the morning started off hot. With temps in the 100 range by 11am, racing was the only thing that kept people out in the heat. Each competitor got a few laps during the 30 minute practice session and then had two laps of qualifying. With 12 competitors in the shootout, we set up a ladder where each pair ran and the best time moved onto the next round.
Bret Voelkel in the Ridetech ’33 Ford , Cheryl Herrick in the Jet Hot ’67 Chevy II, Rob McGaffin in the Rocket Racing Wheels ’65 Olds, and Curt Ukasik in the AFCO ’62 Chevy II, all represented the BangShift family of sponsors well, and had to battle it out hardcore with Rob McGregor in the No Limit Hurst Shifters C10, The Detroit Speed Gang, The Roadster Shop, Summit Racing, BFG, and Optima.
Ultimately the crazy cool, and creative, SBC Racing (Summers and Son’s) ’70 C10 Pickup took home the Sponsor Shootout win with Brad Coomer behind the wheel. Coomer, in the same truck, also took home the Truck category win for the weekend and is now in the PRO category for the rest of 2012! Danny Popp took home the win in Street Machine in his bitchin 1972 Corvette, and Brian Finch took home the PRO Class win on Sunday. If you are confused, you are not alone. There were so many things going on it was hard to keep up!
Full results from Columbus, including current PRO Class points standings are below. Note that Ridetech’s Bret Voelkel is CRUSHING the Competition this year and we couldn’t be happier for him. Major kudos to the Ridetech Crew. Also of note. Brit Marolf, driving the Ridetech 48 Hour Camaro, has won two of the last three events and was the quickest guy in competition on Sunday but a GM fuel pump failure took him out of competition in the last round of qualifying so he was in the show but couldn’t make it to the first round.
Congrats to all the competitors! We’ll see you all again at the Goodguys show in Kansas August 31-September 2.

I’m waiting for the day they make chassis mods like that for mid 70s Dodge trucks…
