(Words and Photos by Darr Hawthorne) Whittier is a small part of the greater Los Angeles/Orange County area, but in that part of town there’s a particularly awesome collection of hot rods, cruisers and racers. The Whittier Area Community Church also has a number of members into our hobby and for the third year, the Church’s ample parking lots held some 350 customs, classics, trucks and hot rods from all over SoCal. Whether you like front engine Top Fuel cars, lead sled customs, restored or hot rodded muscle cars, they had this and a whole lot more in Whittier. Take a look at the photo gallery we’ve got below, because you’ll be surprised at some of the great cars that show up at this event.
What makes this even even better is that the Whittier Area Classic Car show is a fundraiser for outreach programs at the Church and helps fund the yearly Serve Weekend that encourages parishioners to help in the nearby community, providing solutions for local issues. Like many community based organizations, the church is looking for creative ways to raise money to help out in their area. We commend them for using hot rodding to help, and hope more organizations will do the same.
Don’t for a second think that there wasn’t plenty of fun going on at this event either. In addition to the huge volume of cool rides, bands and gourmet food trucks were on site so that you could eat and dance your heart away. The well-organized event has also grown to include two scheduled Cacklefests during the day from nitro dragsters and fuel altereds cackling in front of enthusiastic fans. You know how much we appreciate the smell of nitro around here, so rest assured we were front and center when the good stuff started running out the pipes.
While this photo gallery may not archive every car in attendance, you’ll find some of the best examples of hot rodding in the west, and a variety that we doubt you’ll likely see at most shows on any given Saturday. Thanks to the Whittier Area Car Show, and Whittier Area Community Church, for having us and putting on such a great event.
