Bonneville Speed Week Day Five: Big Records, A 21 Year Spin-Free Streak Is Broken, and More!

Bonneville Speed Week Day Five: Big Records, A 21 Year Spin-Free Streak Is Broken, and More!

Our coverage of day 5 of the 2012 Bonneville Speed Week wouldn’t be complete without a little ribbing, more photos, and records dropping like flies. We’ve got 80 photos for you to check out from this morning, and thanks to great weather, excellent salt conditions, and some serious racers still hammering records, this seems more like day one than day five of Speed Week.

While some of the big boys were having trouble in the last couple days, including Speed Demon who was going for yet another record out here on the salt along with the Top Speed of the Meet which will get them the famed Hot Rod trophy, there are plenty still running and still getting records. Speed Demon is supposed to be running their little motor for even more runs, but we haven’t seen them at the line yet. Blowfish spun yesterday and had some damage, but we were not able to get photos of it. Supposedly the spin hurt some body parts, got air in the cabin, and blew a door off of it, but as we said we didn’t get confirmation photos. We’ll let you know when we find out though.

In other news, Mike Cook Sr. ran his Wayne Jesel powered Alfa Romeo Modified Sports car yesterday and complained of traction issues. They added weight, a little more rear wing, and hit the course hard this morning. Perhaps too hard, as Sr. broke his 21 year spin free streak when he lost traction and looped the Alfa three times just after the 2 mile marker. In classic Cook style, the chase trucks hadn’t even gotten to him before he did a rolling restart and drove the car off the pit side of the track with chase trucks following. We laughed like little girls at the starting line. We hope to get video from the Cooks of the run next week, along with several other team videos for you to check out. We’ll keep you posted.

Until then, check out all our great coverage from Speed Week 2012 by clicking on the links or photos below.

Thanks for the great coverage and photos. I was there for day 3, 4, 5, after a week at Hot August Nights in Reno. “Simply Awesome”, Mecca for Speed Freaks! Can’t wait for next year

Did the Chassis Engineering – Utah Diesel Boys ever get the Big Yellow dual Cummins Streamliner up to Speed? How about the “550.com” liner. Was it just on display, looked like it might not be finished, and finally ? Where were the Nish brothers and the RP car? I saw their van but never them or their car?

I never saw the Chassis Engineering car make any kind of run, or the 550.com liner. Nish is out right now, but may be coming to Mike Cook’s Streamliner shootout. I’m not sure, but was told if they do it will only be for testing.
