Two Time Drag Week Winner Larry Larson Runs 6.99; More to Come This Weekend!

It’s true! Two-time Hot Rod Drag Week winner Larry Larson just ran the quarter mile in 6.99 seconds at 194 mph in his twin-turbo, Mike Moran-powered, formerly pink Nova. We got a call from Larry’s wife Sherry as he was pulling into the pit spot grinning ear to ear at the Thursday night test and tune at the PSCA Street Car Supernationals in Las Vegas. His goal all along was to finish 2009 with a 6.99-second ET before any other Drag Week competitor could do it. Mission accomplished.

We’ve been talking to Larry for the last couple of weeks, and he had been undecided about going to Vegas for the PSCA Street Car Supernationals. Last week he decided he was going after driving the Nova to KCIR for a test and tune night and running a low 7.20 at 200. As he was driving across Arizona yesterday, we asked him if he had changed anything from the car’s 2009 Drag Week trim for this weekend, and his response was “just a new set of tires.” They must have been good ones, Larry.

BangShift.com will be bringing you coverage from the PSCA Street Car Supernationals Saturday and Sunday including video of Larry’s car. Based on the low mph, there should be a lot left in the Nova, so we are hoping for low 6.90s at well over 200. When it happens, we’ll bring it to you. Who knows, maybe we’ll see an .80!

This puts Denny Terzich and his Project Sick Seconds Camaro on notice. He’s been doing the PR on becoming the first competitor to run 6s during Hot Rod Drag Week. That car is still in progress. Larry’s has been there four times, has won twice, and now has put down the 6.99. It’s going to be a GREAT year for street car racing!
