Some of the stuff you see at the racetrack is truly amazing. And with the racing season winding down, we’re kind of disappointed in the fact that we might have a couple months where we have to live without seeing so many freaks, but this week, we’ve got a good one. Our pal Vic Wood from Aeromotive snapped these photos a couple weeks ago at the races of a motorhome that has been converted into a truck. Yes, a truck. Read on. DISCLAIMER: We put the question mark at the end of our Freak of the Week title, because we are at the SEMA Show this week and while that should mean that only the best of the best are here, we have seen some really jacked up whacky crap at the show in years past, so we aren’t counting out the possibility that this ugly son of a bitch could get knocked down to a mere second or third place by the end of the week. We’ll let you know when we find something worse.
What you see before you, we believe, started out as a late ’80’s Sportscoach Class A RV. The fact that we knew that by looking was both scary and cool, but that’s what this thing appears to be. And while the bed is clearly a mismatch, that we hope will end up getting some kind of love to make “presentable” (We use the term loosely), probably the best bit of fabrication on this home built “toterhome” is the rear of the motorhome body itself. It was not just cut of straight and capped, but rather cut to the exact shape of the factory rear fiberglass cap and molded all back together. We’d love to meet the genius, errr idiot, behind this thing, because it both arouses and scares us at the same time. Any guesses on what color the shag carpet in this thing is?
Is it deserving of Freak of the Week?
Here’s is roughly what this motorhome started life as.
In a way, that’s kind of cool. At least in concept, execution is another story alltogether.
It’s almost the ultimate civilian sleeper cab. Very almost.
It’s like a reverse-mullet: party in the front, business in the back
In a way the guy might be on to something. Just think of a low budget racer with some “skill” that could make himself a car hauler/ramp truck type of “thingamagitty” (a Chad word…thingamagitty). Look on your local Craigslist…old motorhomes are usually going cheap. Lotsa of them are big block powered and heavy framed……..etc.
Recipe:
1) Watch Copart listings for CHEAP RV salvage that’s been SPUDDED HARD from behind……
2) Buy it CHEAP, take it home & peel backwreckage until you hit undamaged skin…
3) Close in back end, whatever method is cheap, easy & fast.
4) Then add a box…..color matching is optional…..
…….on a good day, the trim length matches up leaving you with a factory type cab to box gap, apparently this wasn’t one of those days:)
I could use this to tow mt 5th wheel camper.
I say we drop this off at Hot Rod Garage in Oklahoma (the Quicksilver truck guys) with a blank check book and check back in about 10 years.
When I was stationed in San Diego, I remember seeing someone attempting to build a similar truck out of a Ford Econoline RV at MCRD. It went from being a structurally sound RV, to becoming a sawzalled, unsafe “truck” project. I remember asking him about why he didn’t just buy a truck, then all I heard was crickets.
Car hauler with RV tags sounds great to me and no dot commercial vehicle hassle.
The pickup bed and bumper hitch trailer is the odd part.
