When Ford announced they would no longer be producing rear wheel drive Crown Victorias for Police or Taxi companies, another U.S. rear wheel drive platform died. And since then there have been multiple announcements as to what “new” taxi cabs will be in cities all across the country. New York, as the most famous taxi centric city in the United States, is the one that everyone has been watching of course. They have had all kinds of announcements about new models, and ultimately you find a much more varied taxi cab fleet now than ever before. Well, they’ve added yet another one to the mix. It’s a Nissan Leaf that is 100% electric, and instead of just being yellow, it’s yellow and silver. The program to launch Nissan Leafs (Leaves?) into the mix has started out with a pilot program that only includes a handful of cars, and they must be charged twice per day in order to keep up with the demands of being a taxi in the busiest taxi city ever.

Electric vehicles for cabs and public transit only makes sense. Yeah, I’m sad to see the Crown Vic go but idling in traffic is just a stupid way to waste energy.
Do the new taxis have cup holders big enough for my Big Gulp in this nanny state?
Someone needs to make carbon fiber electric Checker cabs right here in the United States!!!
