This Race-Winning Mountain Bike Run Is Too Crazy Not To Share

I know BangShift is supposed to be all about motorized transportation, but sometimes you just find an event so incredible that it surely has some appeal to gearheads. I’m not a particularly crazed bicycle enthusiast myself—I’m surely provoking angry comments by calling this a “mountain bike” run instead of “downhill bike-cross” or whatever its official name might be—but I do appreciate a good time trial run down a mountainside in any vehicle. And this event-winning bike run by Bernard Kerr at Red Bull’s Hardline 2016 is absolutely incredible. The course’s design means a maiming around every turn, dip, jump, and exposed rock fact, but Kerr commits completely on the way to a winning run down the hill in Wales.

From his helmet cam, you can appreciate the sensation of speed and the changing conditions as he rides over prepared course and rocky paths that look a challenge for hikers, let alone a maniac on a bike. Maybe the biggest shock is the depth of the woods through which the course sends riders; at one point, it’s almost pitch-black under the trees’ canopy. Kerr emerges from all of it unscathed and quicker than everyone else. It’s absolutely nuts and I stopped counting the places that would have killed me at about 35.

    A maniac on a bike – you got that right!

    Cyclists are a disease on our roads and I for one wish they’d confine themselves to events like this where a few might get a real thrashing keeping them of sidewalks in towns where they are a danger. In the UK if a cyclist hits a pedestrian and kills them (this has actually happened) they get away with it as there are no laws governing them and they are free to cause mayhem wherever they go!

      As usual CHMG, you rant on about something you know little about.
      This DH run by Bernard Kerr is a thoroughly thought out, well planned and practiced effort by an excellent athlete. That’s as far removed from the mindless idiot city cyclist as you can get.
      How do I know this? My 17 yr old nephew is this years;
      Canadian National Champion Jr Expert Male
      UCI World Cup Tour Champion Jr Expert Male
      World Championship Race winner Jr Expert Male
      I’ve seen how hard he prepares for races like this.
      You want to see city streets being thrashed, check out helmet cam video’s of the Taxco Urban Downhill race.

        I know plenty about the mindless idiot city cyclists but admire your nephew’s achievements. But what about having the same track but starting it from the bottom of the hill? That would be a real test of the rider’s fitness and stamina.

          They did have that type of race as a World Cup Event many years ago but while its a real test of fitness it’s as boring as watching paint dry for spectators.
          But that being said, trials Mountain Biking done like the Scottish Trials Bike scrambles could gain a reasonable audience.
